Flight Restrictions 12/9/2025 Update

Hi Neighbors!

We're writing to give you the latest on the year-round flight restrictions at PBI implemented by the FAA on October 20th, following an order from the U.S. Secret Service.

At today's Board of County Commissioners (the board) workshop, the board voted on two motions, both of which passed.

These were the motions:

  1. To extend the time the FAA has to clarify why the flight restrictions are in place, with the deadline for clarification being Friday, December 12; and
  2. For Palm Beach County to file a Petition for Review on December 12, 2025 if the FAA has not responded to the extension by the deadline.

The Petition for Review is a formal legal challenge against the FAA, asking them to clarify the regulations they relied on in making their decision to implement the restrictions and to explain their reasoning.

County staff will continue to request legal discussions with the FAA, even after the Petition for Review is filed.

The vote on the extension was unanimous, but the more important vote on the legal challenge was close (4-3). We are thankful that Commissioners Flores, Powell and Sachs supported Gregg.
