FAA Removes Requirement of Demonstration of Complex Aircraft on CFI Initial and Single-Engine Initial Commercial Pilot Practical Tests
This week the FAA published FAA Notice N8900.463 which specifically addresses a change in policy in the Commercial Pilot ACS and the CFI PTS documents to allow for completion of a practical test without requiring demonstration of a complex aircraft on certain tests.
This represents a significant change of interest to flight training providers. While the changes to the ACS and PTS documents in no way (at this time) eliminate the regulatory requirement for training toward a rating or certificate in a complex aircraft or the completion of an endorsement for such a certificate, it does eliminate the requirement to bring this type of an aircraft with for a practical test. The change allows greater flexibility for training providers to utilize different aircraft in the completion of "complex aircraft training" or endorsements during the training that will not be required to be used on a practical test.
It is important to note that, "There is no change to the complex airplane training and endorsement requirements of § 61.31(e) or to the commercial pilot aeronautical experience requirements of § 61.129(a)(3)(ii) or part 141 appendix D."
The changes are only applicable to the demonstration requirements that now previously required the demonstration of use of a complex aircraft on single-engine initial CFI and Commercial practical tests.
This restriction is specifically directed at the use of "single-engine" aircraft during a practical test. Of note, the FAA highlighted that, "the FAA finds that no longer requiring an applicant to provide a complex airplane for the initial commercial pilot with an airplane single-engine rating practical test or a flight instructor with an airplane single-engine rating practical test will not result in a decreased level of safety."
The two new ACS/PTS documents can be found at the following links:
Training providers, DPEs, and applicants are advised to review these changes before any future practical tests. The changes that were made became effective immediately upon publication.

Learn to Fly Month Approaching Quickly, What Will You Be Doing to Promote Flying This May?
Learn to Fly Month, which starts May 1, 2018, is a continuation of the month-long initiative that FSANA began last year intended to facilitate flight training providers in attracting new potential entrants into the field of aviation. FSANA is again encouraging flight schools and organizations to collaborate and hold events and promotions focused on getting more people to learn to fly.
Last year, FSANA staff interviewed
Mario Andretti about his love of flight and his involvement as Learn to Fly Month Honorary Chairman.
Mario is an amazing race car driver. He's won Formula One, Indy Car, World Sports Car, and of course, NASCAR. He's been awarded Driver of the Year multiple times and even Driver of the Century. But that's not all, he also has a passion for aviation.
During that interview, which is still very pertinent to this year's efforts, Andretti stressed that, as he says, "I could not have lived or could not have done [what he has done] without either general aviation, which of course I was part of, I owned aircraft since 1968, but also, commercial aviation."
He continues to note that aviation, "was a tool that allowed me to complete my career, not only [to] facilitate movements from event to event, but also to have a family with me. Otherwise, I think that even would have been impossible with the type of schedule that I was keeping."
Andretti has owned and flown aircraft such as Piper Navajos, the Mitsubishi Mu-2, and a few bigger corporate-style aircraft such as the Gulfstream IIB and Hawker 600 and 700. While Andretti did not get a pilot's certificate, he did have the opportunity to fly some unique aircraft in his lifetime under the guidance of qualified instructors.
Mario believes that aviation offers a unique and rewarding career option and encourages "young people, whether male or female, to really look at the potential that there is out there for a career in flying."
FSANA looks forward to this year's Learn to Fly Month efforts around the country. In the mean time, feel free to hear what Mario had to say last year:
How Any Flight School Can Participate This May
All flight schools across the country are invited and encouraged to participate in Learn to Fly Month, not just FSANA members. If you haven't set anything in motion for this initiative yet, it isn't too late! FSANA is providing this set of six free tools intended to help flight schools and others interested in promoting Learn to Fly Month. Please take a moment to check them out and incorporate them into your own Learn to Fly Month events.

ALSIM Announces New "Airliner" Simulator
Friday, April 20th, 2018 - Orlando, FL, USA - ALSIM, the 24-year-old global flight simulator manufacturer, announced their newest and largest flight training device to date, 'The Airliner,' at the World Airline Training Summit (WATS) in Orlando, Florida. Developed for advanced airline pilot training programs at high-end flight schools and training centers, the Airliner is a multipurpose hybrid simulator with two configurations representative of Airbus and Boeing transport category airplanes, the airline industry's most dominant fleets. "With the increasing industry pressure to produce airline pilots due to the growing global pilot shortage, airline pilots entering the market will likely be in the Airbus A320 and/or Boeing 737. ALSIM hybrid technology meets that need, giving pilots representative experience in these two major fleet types and operational philosophies early in their careers. Moreover, the ALSIM Airline model improves pilot preparation for transport category type ratings and airline selection alike," according to ALSIM. The ALSIM Airline simulator was engineered in response to regulatory requirements, expert analysis, and 1000s of hours of customer feedback from ALX Medium Jet simulator operators. It provides medium and large Approved Training Organizations (ATOs) the ability to provide valuable experience in Airbus and Boeing operations, as well as provide other training to include the Advanced Pilot Standard Multi Crew Coordination (APS MCC), Jet Orientation Courses, Airline Selection (preparation and skill tests) and modernized Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT). The ALSIM Airliner's advanced UPRT capabilities are being developed in partnership with Aviation Performance Solutions (APS), the global leader in integrated on-aircraft and advanced simulator UPRT. The ALSIM Airline's all-new industry-leading UPRT Instructor Operating Station (IOS) provides an intuitive interface and will meet and exceed technical guidance issued by the ICAO Doc 10011: Manual on Aeroplane UPRT and the FAA's National Simulator Program. This all-new development will give instructors a powerful and informative technology tool to deliver highly effective UPRT instruction that maximizes the transfer of UPRT knowledge and skill from flight simulator to real-world operations, while at the same time eliminating the risk of negative training. Timed to give the business jet and airline industry the robust tools it needs to economically address forthcoming UPRT mandates to ICAO member states in simulation, the APS-ALSIM UPRT IOS advancement will help pilots around the globe bring everyone home safely. About ALSIM ALSIM has been developing and manufacturing FAA & EASA certified AATD, FNPT II & FNPT II MCC flight simulators since 1994.
