OCPA Board Names Joe Mosca as CEO

OCPA’s Board of Directors selected Joe Mosca as the new chief executive officer (CEO). Mosca has served as OCPA’s interim CEO since June 2023 and previously held the position of director of communications and external affairs. Mosca has extensive experience in community energy as a founding member of San Diego Community Power, the second-largest community choice energy program in California. He also brings utility experience from his time at San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Company. Mosca has also served in elected and appointed offices including Mayor of Sierra Madre in Los Angeles County, Deputy Mayor of Encinitas in San Diego County and president of the San Dieguito Water District.

Pilot Feed-in-Tariff Program to Spur Local Renewable Energy Projects

Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) is launching a pilot Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program to encourage investment in small-scale, local renewable energy projects in member cities. OCPA’s Board of Directors approved the program to negotiate and enter into power purchase agreements for up to 2 megawatts for eligible projects. Typical projects would include in-fill development alongside freeways, on rooftops and in empty lots, infusing capital into the local economy, creating jobs, and localizing energy. The program will begin this Spring. Stay tuned!

Get Ready for CicloIrvine, a Car-Free Open Streets Event on May 4

CicloIrvine, the City of Irvine’s first-ever car-free open streets event, will take place May 4. Nearly two miles of city streets will be closed to cars and open for the public to stroll, bike and roll across Barranca Parkway and Harvard Avenue. Take in an unprecedented view of Irvine alongside live music, art and other activities.

OCPA Bolsters Team With New Hires

OCPA bolstered its team with two key hires. Nataly Morales Sandoval has joined as a new energy programs analyst, focused on overseeing and expanding OCPA’s customer rebates, incentives and savings tools, including the OCPA Marketplace, OhmConnect and community grant programs. Also, Julio Sanchez is OCPA’s new administrative assistant. Sanchez brings with him an extensive customer service background, passion and dedication that will support the agency as it continues to grow. 

Q&A: OC Goes Solar Executive Director Senait Forthal

As Orange County and the rest of California navigate toward a more sustainable future, rooftop and broader residential solar and battery storage will play a big part in providing the needed affordable and reliable clean power. To make that happen, OCPA will need strong partners such as OC Goes Solar, a local nonprofit working to help spread the word about the benefits of residential solar to all members of the community. We spoke with OC Goes Solar Executive Director Senait Forthal about SOMAH, which is helping multifamily affordable housing properties adopt solar, as well as other trends including efforts to expand residential solar demand amid state policy headwinds.

Cal-CCA Lobbying Trip in Washington D.C.

OCPA Board Chair Fred Jung, CEO Joe Mosca and Regulatory and Legislative Manager Steven Halligan traveled to Washington, DC as part of a joint advocacy trip with other California CCAs. We advocated for investments in energy infrastructure, clean energy technologies and customer energy programs that will help reduce the cost of energy, reduce the demand on the electricity grid and move toward electrification.
