May 2020 Edition
THE GOVERNOR'S QUACKER
2019-2020 Governor Allen Yergovich

Greetings Kiwanis Family:

I’ll start by repeating what I said last month - I trust that you are well, staying safe, taking care of yourselves and your families, being grateful, and maintaining a positive attitude. These things remain important as some of the state re-opens in stages and some of us venture out to the degree we feel comfortable.

The Kiwanis International Convention was cancelled last month after the April 22 International Board Meeting.  I thought this was very wise, especially due to the global nature of the event and the extensive travel involved. The International elections for Vice-President and Trustees will be held by International Council some time this Summer. International Council is made up of the International Board, plus all current District Governors, plus all Past International Presidents. The Florida District is supporting our own Chuck Gugliuzza in his run for International Vice-President.

Last month, I thought that our Florida District Convention was definitely on, and that the situation was very different from International. However, through many conversations, I came to realize that it is not, really. Covid has restricted assembling here as much as everywhere else, and nobody knows when it will be safe for large groups. The health and welfare of our members is of the greatest importance. About 50% of our DCON attendance is over 65 making us a high risk group. Disney will likely not be open, which was the main draw for the location chosen long ago. Social Distancing will make the convention impossible, and we will share the hotel and public spaces with other unknown groups. For these reasons, and more, the full District Board voted to cancel District Convention. All Kiwanis Club officers were notified in an official letter and there was a posting on the Florida Kiwanis Facebook page. I am as devastated by this cancellation as anyone, but I do believe it was the right call. We are not alone, as many districts are cancelling their conventions.

We will be working hard to replace every aspect of District Convention with new and different ways to conduct district business, educate our members and officers, and socialize. Please reach out to your Lt Governor if you have a creative or unique idea of how we can best accomplish these goals and make the best of it.

The other item that the Kiwanis International Board approved is that every new member to an existing club will pay no International fees through September 30, 2020. They asked that Districts and clubs follow suit, which the Florida District Executive Committee did. I recommend that your club bill these new free members (or all your members) at least $107 in the month of September, because your club will be billed for every name on the roster in October.  This is a great opportunity to get someone involved at no cost , then it’s your job to get them hooked! Start your membership drives today!

I hope your clubs are meeting. Zoom is a very easy platform to have a virtual meeting, many clubs are using it. The free version is limited to 40 minutes (which could be very advantageous for some people, you know who you are!), however, the Pro version is available through through the Florida Kiwanis Foundation. Check with your Trustee or contact Foundation Executive Director Alison. Thank you FKF!

Please continue to keep in touch, check-in/on your members, meet virtually and share your meeting info.
Please get your elections done and reported.
Please continue to serve, it’s what we are all about. There are lots of ideas out there. Remember all our community partners. There is so much to do, we just need to do much of it differently. Be safe.

I am still optimistic! We are thriving! #GetQuacking!

Kiwanis News
Kiwanis Children's Fund
Kids need Kiwanis more than ever.  Thanks to our members’ generous support, the Kiwanis Children’s Fund has established a program to help Kiwanis Clubs meet the urgent needs of our communities.  When times are hard, Kiwanians want to help. That’s who we are.

The COVID-19 Response Program was designed to quickly award grants to kick-start projects that help children and families who have encountered hardships due to the pandemic. While the scope of our projects will vary, we will accept grant requests up to $2,500. Whether your community might benefit from your club sewing or purchasing face masks for families or purchasing diapers and other infant needs, or possibly providing educational materials to local families in need - we are here to help.

Please click here to visit the Kiwanis Children’s Fund website for information on how to apply, or email Matthew Sheehan (District Chair for Kiwanis Children's Fund).
New Member Fees Waived

To help clubs with membership recruitment this year, Kiwanis International has decided to waive new member fees for the remainder of the 2020 administrative year. The Florida District voted last month to do the same for new members. This applies to new members joining existing clubs. Clubs are encouraged to vote to do the same for new members.

Studies show that philanthropic giving and activity rise tremendously during difficult financial times. Take advantage of this dues waiver by asking friends, family, and colleagues to join some of your ongoing Kiwanis club activities as a new member this summer. We all know they will fall in love with your club and the Kiwanis organization and be ready to pay renewal dues on October 1st!
Club Leadership Education 2020

Kiwanis International (KI) will be hosting VIRTUAL Session on President, Secretary and Treasurer training for incoming 2020-2021 officers throughout the week of June 8th. These KI sessions will cover high-level non-district specific topics. See schedule below:
To cover the FLORIDA DISTRICT-Specific information, Debbie McNulty, the Leadership Education Coordinator for Florida District, is working with her CLE instructors to schedule additional <Virtual> trainings to be held later on in the summer. Please note that Debbie is awaiting the registration details from KI and will send them out to clubs as soon as they are available so individuals can sign up for the courses.
Florida Kiwanis Webinars

Hello Kiwanis Friends! I hope this newsletter finds you in good health. I’m sure you are just as disappointed (but understanding) as I am that we will not be coming together for the Florida Kiwanis Convention in August. Each year, we look forward to seeing our Kiwanis family from around the state and learn valuable information to bring back to our clubs. But did you know that there is a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips already? All of our pre-recorded webinars are available to view at any time by going to the Florida Kiwanis website webinar page at  https://flkiwanis.org/webinars . As with all of the webinars, you must click on the link, enter your name and e-mail address, and click on Register before viewing.

This support includes matching grants, mini- grants, emergency grants, and scholarship opportunities to Kiwanis Clubs and SLPs. The Kiwanis District of Florida is fortunate to have such an active Kiwanis Foundation that is continually increasing its impact each year to our clubs and overall Kiwanis community.

We have renewed our membership and now we come to YOU asking for your support. Will you join as a  Friends of the Foundation  annual member today?
From the Kiwanis Club of Greater Collier

My club requested an emergency grant from the FL Kiwanis Foundation. We gave 40, $50 gift cards to low income families in our community. As the major goal of our club, we donated 40 door alarms and drowning prevention brochures and coloring books to bring awareness to drowning prevention to the families. My husband and fellow Kiwanian donated 40 books from his publishing business.

The families and the preschool were so grateful, and we were grateful to still be able to serve those in need. Many of these 40 families’ providers lost their jobs!!

Thank you,
