A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

To celebrate our 60th Anniversary, throughout the year we will be recalling many of the people and milestones that have impacted the success of Florida Lions Eye Bank!

DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIPS
From the very beginning Florida Lions Eye Bank’s founders recognized that in order to maximize our impact on the community, we would need the help of many partners.

Since its inception, Florida Lions Eye Bank has depended on the generosity of law enforcement and airlines to help transport ocular tissue across Florida and beyond. In addition, for the past 60 years Florida Lions Eye Bank has partnered with medical examiners, funeral directors, hospitals, and nursing homes to expedite ocular recovery.

But our most important partner has been our community of donors and donor families. It is because of the generosity of our eye donors that we have been able to impact the lives of over 65,000 recipients!

OUR FOUNDING FATHERS

Florida Lions Eye Bank’s founding President Lion Jimmy Nelson and his Officers dedicated countless hours to creating a solid foundation for our organization. This effort included sharing the importance of eye donation and securing eye donor cards from members of the South Florida community.

We look forward to celebrating this
momentous anniversary throughout the year!
YOU ARE INVITED TO OUR OPEN HOUSE

Florida Lions Eye Bank will be holding its annual membership meeting and Open House on Saturday, March 12th from 10am – 2:30pm. The event will include a presentation and tours of our facility and partner research labs. Following the tours, we will be celebrating with paella and sangria luncheon on the patio.

Serum Tears are an ophthalmic biological therapy made by combining the patient’s own blood serum with sterile, preservative-free saline. Human serum contains growth factors and proteins that, when filtered and diluted, may be used to help heal epithelial defects and relieve symptoms of severe dry eye.

In 2017, Florida Lions Eye Bank began the service of producing Serum Tears for patients throughout the state of Florida. Unfortunately, most insurance plans including Medicare and Medicaid, do not typically cover Serum Tears. As such, patients are responsible for the cost of this therapy. Because of this, Florida Lions Eye Bank charges a minimal fee for the drops, which is below the cost to produce them. Yet there are still patients in our community who need these drops but are unable to afford them.

Recognizing this need, in 2018 the Beauty of Sight Foundation, with the support of the Florida Lions Eye Bank, launched the Serum Tears Assistance Program. This program provides free eye drops for patients in need. To receive free eye drops, patients must complete an application and provide proof of their stated income.

Patients are qualified based on the United States Federal Poverty Guidelines and, if approved, receive a 3-month supply of drops completely free of charge.
