2023 Performance Report

Escambia County and Pensacola are well-positioned for an increase in diversified economic growth led by technology, manufacturing, defense and logistics business sectors. In particular, the community has seen substantial growth in early-stage technology companies that are attracted to Pensacola in part because the area offers an exceptional quality of life for employees and their families.

Recognizing these and other growth opportunities, FloridaWest focuses on existing business retention and expansion, targeted business recruitment, entrepreneurial development, and asset development to better prepare the community for economic development.

FloridaWest’s programs, which are stated in a five-year strategic plan, share the ultimate goal of providing better opportunities and quality of living for all residents. Click below to read the report which gives a snapshot of the FloridaWest team's performance for 2023.

Hellcat Hangar Launches “Sea Stories”

Hellcat Hanger is fully equipped production studio founded by local entrepreneurs David and Ben Van Der Like.

The father-and-son duo provide their clients with video creation, editing, production services and access to their community-oriented production studio.

Their latest endeavor, Sea Stories, seeks to transform aviation- and maritime-related content into a video series that’s entertaining and educational. Once they complete the series, Ben’s dream is to one day see it play on a major platform like Hulu, Netflix or Discovery.

“I grew up hearing these stories and there’s a lot of nostalgia about a look into the world at sea,” said Van Der Like. “Our vision is to give viewers a glimpse behind the scenes — to tap into a vast network of people whose stories have not been told — from Top Gun pilots to harbor pilots and everything in between.”

Hellcat Hangar has partnered with the National Museum of Naval Aviation to help curate the stories and are currently in the process of securing funding to make their dream a reality.

“We’ve been working on the concept of Sea Stories for quite some time,” said Van Der Like “We finally began launching the videos in February and the stories are amazing. We’ve already had some really great feedback and are excited to produce the next episode.”

A note from FloridaWest

Community Leaders & Friends of FloridaWest,

Having a sense of “balance” should be an important part of any community’s economic growth process. Issues like diversity in job and career opportunities, not being overdependent upon a certain employer or business sector, and the geography of local economic development are all important issues for forward-thinking communities. Being proactive in addressing job opportunities for our workforce, achieving economic diversity and property development for businesses is an important part of building a strong and sustainable regional economy.

For Pensacola and Escambia County, we are well-positioned to not only grow, but to grow in ways that make our community more balanced. Our economic strengths, such as defense, cybersecurity and other technologies, are obvious. Downtown Pensacola is a magnet for world-class technology employers such as IHMC, IRIS and Actigraph. Our community is in excellent position to support more tech employment, but for those companies and workers interested in basic manufacturing or professional office opportunities, we also have a lot to offer. While much of our current economic development activity is focused on established business parks, we are now also working on projects in new locations in the County.

Bottom line, whether a company is looking at downtown for engineering, R&D or office operations, or for access to airport, rail and deep-water infrastructure, or an industrial site even in a rural area, we have improved what we can now offer. We are excited about the developments we are currently working on, especially given the wide range of jobs, locations, and types of businesses involved. Our sense of balance is something we should all feel good about!

Sincerely,

Brian Hilson
