Keep the Color Coming

Flower Season is not Over Yet!

There are still about 8 weeks of good growing season left in Central Oregon. Don't hang up your gardening gloves quite yet.

Some of our favorite choices for fall planting include: Mums, Pansies, Asters, Echinachia, Potentilla, Monardia and Caryopteris... just to name a few. The really late Red Hot Pokers will put on a good show until the end of September. Don't forget about Penstemon, most varieties will produce a second round of blooms that take them through to the first real frost.

Planters are another great way to keep the color coming. Replant your containers or hanging baskets with some of the cold-hardy choices above. Add interest by including ornamental kales and cabbages.

Featured Plant: Kodiak Orange Diervilla

GARY’S FAVORITE PLANT

Shrub of the year, two years running. Kodiak Orange takes fall color to a whole new level, lighting up your landscape with its glowing orange foliage. In early summer, bright yellow flowers contrast against lush green leaves. It is a durable native plant that thrives in shade (although partial sun will produce the best color). It is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and even attracts pollinators! An excellent landscape shrub that reaches 48” tall and wide at maturity.

Fall Vegetable Gardening

Garlic is easy to grow and requires very little space in the garden. It grows from individual cloves broken off a whole bulb. Each clove multiplies in the ground, forming a new bulb that consists of 5-10 cloves. Planting Garlic is a breeze. Separate cloves and space them 4-6" apart. Rows should be at least one foot apart. Plant garlic cloves with the pointed end up, pushing each clove 1-2" into the ground, lightly pack the soil around it, and water well.

Radishes are a great option for your fall vegetable garden. A speedy veggie that only requires about 3 weeks in the ground. Radish are extremely easy to grow. They don't need full sun and can even grow between other vegetables.

No matter what veggie variety we are planting, we always use Fertilome Tomato and Vegetable Food (7-22-8) to produce the best harvest.

Ready to Burst into Fall Color

Vine Maple

A classic, multi-stemmed tree frequently used in northwest gardens. The Vine Maple is a durable native choice that can be found naturally growing in the shade of large conifers. However, it can also grow in partial sun which will prompt its best fall foliage. An adaptable species, it is not picky about soil type and can handle occasional dry spells once established. At maturity, Vine Maples reach up to 20’ tall and wide. Best left unpruned to develop natural character.

Fall is Coming... and so are the deer

Now is the time to protect your trees from deer damage. Every year come fall, we see more and more damage to trees caused by the deer rubbing their antlers against the trunks. This damage is easily preventable by installing a tree guard. The tree guard is made of a heavy black mesh that easily wraps around the trunk. It is free standing, which means leaving a tree guard up year long will not hinder growth or affect your trees health in any way. We also carry a more temporary, plastic trunk wrap which is meant to provide protection for a single season.

Trees aren't the only thing to worry about when it comes to deer. They are known to be indiscriminate browsers and will try almost anything once! Protect that garden that you worked so hard on all summer long with a deer repellent. Our top choices are:

Bobbex - Made up of 12 ingredients that "frighten" deer and other small wildlife known for damaging plants. Because it coats the foliage, Bobbex aids in moisture retention. It is rain and irrigation resistant as well.

Liquid Fence - A rain resistant mixture with egg solids and garlic oil. Environmentally safe and long lasting.
