Flu Vaccine Clinics
Getting vaccinated each year is the best way to protect yourself – and others – against seasonal influenza.

Annual flu vaccination is always strongly recommended for college students due to the highly contagious nature of influenza and the close proximity within which students live and study. Flu vaccination is especially important during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic to help prevent individuals from conflating symptoms or experiencing both illnesses simultaneously.

See information from the CDC for people who are at higher risk of developing flu-related complications.

Each fall, Cornell Health partners with Wegmans Pharmacy to provide our annual on-campus flu vaccination clinics.

Clinics are:
  • Open to all – students, staff, faculty, retirees, student spouses/partners, and other community and family members (age 3+)
  • FREE for all students, staff, faculty, & retirees (other community members: the cost will depend on your insurance; most plans cover flu vaccination)
  • Offering 3 vaccine types: Regular dose, senior dose (for age 65+), and thimerosal-free flu shots (learn more about flu vaccine types

For more information and dates of the clinics, please visit Cornell Health's web page.

Building Soils for Better Crops: Ecological Management for Healthy Soils
Thursday, September 22, 2022, 4:00 - 5:00pm
160 Mann Library

Organic matter was once extolled as the essential soil ingredient, but the availability of inexpensive synthetic fertilizers and the mass industrialization of farming after World War II have led to a serious soil crisis. What can we do to increase the vitality of soils today and for future generations?

In a live Chats in the Stacks talk about his book Building Soils for Better Crops: Ecological Management for Healthy Soils (SARE Outreach Publications), Harold van Es explains how soil health has degraded at the global level, and the steps that everyone can take—from home gardeners and small farmers to large agricultural corporations and food industries—to improve and preserve this essential resource.

Van Es is a professor of soil and water management with extension, research, and teaching duties. He leads the Cornell Soil Health Initiative and has served as both chair of the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences and as president of the Soil Science Society of America. Additionally, Van Es is the lead developer of both the Comprehensive Assessment of Soil Health framework and of a digital technology for crop nitrogen management called Adapt-N.

This book talk is sponsored by Mann Library. Light refreshments will be served.

Helping Others
Mary George Opperman Veterinary Patient Assistance Fund
Mary George Opperman, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, recently left Cornell after 26 years of service.

Mary dedicated her career to advancing a workplace that values and supports employees as whole persons. She was an ardent employee advocate, a devoted ambassador to the local and regional communities, and a true champion for the successes and achievements of our Cornell staff.

She is also an avid lover of animals and has never met a dog she wouldn't dote on. During the pandemic, Mary was often joined in her home office by her snoring American Staffordshire Terrier, Jake. On campus, she has always welcomed visits from the campus K9s - sometimes greeting the dog before saying hello to the accompanying officers.

In the spirit of her unwavering support of Cornell employees and families and her love of animals, the Mary George Opperman Veterinary Patient Assistance Fund has been established in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Funds will go to the care of animals owned by current and retired Cornell staff who may need financial assistance. To be eligible, veterinary care must be provided by the Cornell University Hospital for Animals.
