New Version 4.0 Now Available!
The Eagle has landed!  Well, perhaps not quite as historic as landing a man on the moon but the official release of FlyQ EFB version 4.0 feels like a giant leap for pilotkind to us.
What is FlyQ EFB 4.0?

Version 4.0 is our largest update ever.  It adds a powerful new dimension to your flying: Post-Flight Analysis

To do this, we added a number of features that are individually powerful and incredible when combined including:

Visual Logbook
Visual Logbook

The new Visual Logbook is a big improvement from standard pilot logbooks. To start, it saves you time by auto-generating entries from the built-in data recorder. Or you can import logs from other systems and manually create log entries. It shows lists of flights with visual images of your track, allows extensive filtering and time period selection, and generates text and graphics-based reports. Best of all, it includes a unique visual feature that uses a color-coded "heatmap" to show how often you've flown to each airport (this is especially useful when combined with the filtering and time-period selection).

 Visual Playback and Analysis
Visual Playback and Graphical Analysis

FlyQ automatically performs a detailed post-flight analysis that generates insightful graphs about every flight. Want more detail? FlyQ includes a compehensive integrated playback system so you can play any flight back in either 2D or 3D (or both), control the playback speed, and instantly jump to any point in the flight. You can also export the data for analysis in other systems.
Floq
Floq Network

Floq (pronounced "Flock") is a private, patent-pending system that optionally connects you with your friends, flying club, instructor or student, corporate flight department, and more. It lets you see, on a color-coded map or in a list view, where your friends are flying, comment and ask questions about their flights, and discover more about their destinations and flights. It's completely optional, of course, and you can select whichever privacy level you prefer, including keeping your flights strictly private.

We want to give a special thanks to Connie Socash for coming up with the Floq name as part of our "Name the Feature" contest in the most recent Newsletter.  Your new iPad Mini 5 will be on its way to you soon!

We also want to thank the nearly 600 people (wow!) who offered some incredible suggestions that made it hard to pick just one winner!  I also have to admit that some made us laugh.  Special mention there to Arthur Friedman who came up with Log, Log Me Do, Come-A-Log, Log Gone It, and who could forget Get a Log Little Doggie?  I spit up my coffee when I read those!

CFI Endorsements
CFI / Student Pilot Endorsement and More

The Floq Network makes it easy for CFI's to follow their students' flights. The new Endorsement feature makes it very easy for a CFI to grant endorsements to students from the comfort of their own home or office (due to Floq) or directly from a student's iPad / iPhone.

And remember that Seattle Avionics LOVES CFI's and Student Pilots so we offer incredible savings for them: CFI's get the full VFR + IFR package (normally $139) for just $19.   Private Pilot students get a full year of our VFR package for the same $19!.   Click here to buy at the CFI or Student Pilot price.

Add Import Edit
Visual Logbook Details: Add, Import, and Edit Entries

Logbook entries are automatically added by FlyQ's  Flight Recorder and can be imported from MyFlightbook or ForeFlight, or manually added. This video also shows how to edit and delete existing entries.

Search and Filtering
Visual Logbook Details: Searching and Filtering

The Search field at the top of the Flights list makes it easy to search for flights by name, tail number, takeoff or landing airport, time and/or other criteria such as the name of the pilot, aircraft type, or takeoff and landing pair. In addition to the list of matching flights, FlyQ also gives a quick summary of those flights -- total number of flights, total distance and duration, etc. at the top.

A Note for Users of Older iPads

In May,  we made a blog post that mentioned that we were considering dropping support for some very old iPad and iPhone models because they are simply incapable of running FlyQ with acceptable reliably and performance.  Moreover, even attempting to get FlyQ EFB 4.0 to run on such devices would take critical development and testing time away from features and bug fixes that benefit many more people.

Therefore, FlyQ EFB 4.0 requires a device running at least iOS 10.  However...

Older devices currently running FlyQ will continue to run and will continue to get updated ChartData every 28 days. But no new versions of FlyQ EFB will run on these older devices.  Users will continue to be able to download version 3.3.1 on older devices.

The devices that  will not be supported by FlyQ EFB v4.0 are:
  • iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3
  • iPad mini 1
  • iPhone 4S or earlier
To be clear that means that these devices (and more)  will support FlyQ EFB 4.0:
  • All iPad Air models
  • All iPad Pro models
  • iPad Mini 2, 3, 4, and 5
  • iPad 4
  • All other full-sized iPad models
  • iPhone 5 and above
Ideally, we would have liked to continue support for the iPad 3.  However, Apple limited the maximum iOS version that it can use to 9.3.5 and there is no clean way to somehow support it but no other iPad model that is limited to 9.3.5.

We hope everyone understands that we're doing this so our development and testing time can focus on the iPad and iPhone models that the vast majority of our customers use.  Allocating dev and test time to older models is unlikely to produce a product that would run acceptably on the older devices but would negatively impact features and fixes for the newer devices as dev and test resources are finite.
