Flying Fish News - 3/17/2021
For the calendar
  • Monday, March 29 - Sunday, April 4: Our building will be entirely shut down due to construction. No practices during these seven days.
  • Our current season goes until Sunday, May 2. View the practice schedule and other info here.
Reminder about travel
If you're traveling for spring break, we are still following the City of Chicago's Covid-19 emergency travel order, which requires a negative test or a 10-day quarantine when returning from a state in the orange category.

You'll find the map with state designations and more information here.
Upcoming swim meets
flying fish
You read that right! Illinois Swimming, our local affiliate of USA Swimming, is allowing a gradual return to limited capacity meets. (The photo is from our last pre-Covid meet at the YWCA in March of 2020.)

  • A few of our high school-age swimmers qualified for the 2021 Illinois Swimming Winter Open hosted by FMC Aquatic, which will be held March 18-21 in Westmont. Good luck, swimmers!

  • Gold, Diamond, Platinum, and Thunderfish will participate in time trials at the YWCA March 24-27. If you are in these groups, you should have received a group email about this.

  • Looking ahead, we plan to hold an intersquad/time trial for younger swimmers -- who are participating in our current season -- toward the end of April. Look for more information in the weeks ahead.

Go Fish!
Welcome back, high school boys!
Welcome back and congratulations to the Flying Fish boys who recently completed their high school seasons with top-notch swims. Read more about the boys here and here.
Siebel Sailors is looking for applicants
The Siebel Sailors program at the Sheridan Shore Sailing School in Wilmette is looking for applicants for its spring and summer sessions. Full scholarships are available!

The goal of Siebel Sailors is to make sailing more accessible and increase opportunity and diversity in the sport. The Siebel program wants to recruit "sailors from diverse backgrounds of race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin. . ."

If you are middle school- or high school-age and you fit the criteria, apply for this program by reaching out to Susan Barton, a former Flying Fish parent. Or talk to a coach.
Check your Community Pass account
If you haven't paid your registration fees or recent equipment charges on Community Pass, please do so. If you are paying your registration fees in two installments, the second installment is due April 2.
Reminder about drop off and pickup
Thank you for adhering to our updated guidelines for drop off and pickup.

As a reminder:
  • Cars are not allowed in the turnaround driveway north of our building (accessible from Ridge Avenue) for swim team drop off and pickup.
  • Please park and walk to the pool entrance on Ridge Avenue.

It won't be long until we re-open our pool lobby and expanded parking lot, which will make this process much easier!
Check out the aquatics section of the YWCA annual report
Have you seen YWCA Evanston/North Shore's recent annual impact report? You might recognize some of the people featured in the section on aquatics. Check it out here.
YWCA is building for the future!
We’re building a stronger, more sustainable aquatics program that will support swimmers and their families for years to come, with new and renovated locker rooms, new family changing rooms, new ventilation systems, and 40% more parking!

We’re expanding our ability to provide emergency housing and support for women and children experiencing domestic violence by building a new Family Support Center.

We’re helping families build a path to economic stability by adding more space for job training, financial education and housing assistance. And we’re building communities committed to equity by increasing convening space for our Equity Institute trainings and workshops.

For almost two years we’ve been in the leadership phase of an $18.5 million capital campaign to support this expansion. We’ve raised almost $17 million, and now we’re inviting the broader community to help us cross the finish line!

We’re hoping our entire swim community will give now to help us finish the campaign! Every gift, in any amount, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by our Flying Fish Challenge. This $100,000 matching gift challenge was generously created by YWCA swim families in our Flying Fish community. Please join them, and make your gift today!
