When did you start swimming at the YWCA?

I started at the YWCA doing group lessons when I was 5. I then joined Greenfish when I was in first grade, and I've been here ever since.

What is your favorite Flying Fish memory?

I’m between two. I loved going to Charlotte meets, the energy, stakes, and camaraderie are unmatched. It’s always just such a fun experience, especially as a senior.

But also the training trips were always hard but fun. I loved hanging out with my teammates, whether it was going out to eat, watching movies, or vlogging. The trips to Fort Laudy were always a great time.

What will you miss most about swimming at the YWCA?

Being with my teammates, 100%. Just a great group of dudes. Shout out to Unc Lane and Lane 3. I’m also just gonna miss representing the team, but I know my teammates are gonna step up.

What are your plans for next year?

I’ll be attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to study Finance and Accounting.

Anything else you want to say to young swimmers, parents, coaches or anyone else?

I want to thank all the coaches for the hard work they put into this program. We appreciate all you do. The YWFF wouldn’t be the same without you guys. I’m gonna miss asking Pete and Terry questions about the set right after they explained it.

To younger swimmers, remember to always put your best foot forward and bring a positive attitude to not just swimming but to life. Remember you can only control what you can control, so be sure to enjoy the journey not the destination. And if you’re ever nervous before a race, just remember that your mind knows what you need to do, your body just has to execute it.

What's the difference between long course and short course?

Long course refers to a pool that measures 50 meters in length. The standard size for international swimming (including the Olympics) is 50 meters. Typically, swim meets conducted in the U.S. from the end of April through August are long course.

Short course refers to a pool that measures 25 yards in length. Generally, meets conducted in the U.S. from October to March are short course. The YWCA upstairs pool is a short course pool.

The Flying Fish coaches do not recommend long course meets for beginning swimmers or those with limited meet experience.
