New starting blocks are in!

Coach Gale, who passed away in 2025, would be so happy to see the new starting blocks, which were installed on June 4. (Yes, they include backstroke ledges!)

Gale wanted only the best for current and future Flying Fish, so, before she died, she set aside her own funds for seed money for the new blocks. These funds were supplemented by generous Flying Fish families and other donors.

Thank you to Gale and her family, and thank you to the Flying Fish community for helping make Gale's vision a reality.

What's the difference between long course and short course?

Long course refers to a pool that measures 50 meters in length. The standard size for international swimming (including the Olympics) is 50 meters. Typically, swim meets conducted in the U.S. from the end of April through August are long course.

Short course refers to a pool that measures 25 yards in length. Generally, meets conducted in the U.S. from October to March are short course. The YWCA upstairs pool is a short course pool.

The Flying Fish coaches do not recommend long course meets for beginning swimmers or those with limited meet experience.
