Flying Fish News - 4/25/2020
For the calendar
Our pools are currently closed but we hope to restart programming in June.

If you paid for the spring season, you should have received an email about your options.
Help make the Flying Fish a Safe Sport Recognized Club
We are committed to ensuring a safe, healthy, and positive environment for our swimmers, coaches, parents, and volunteers.

During this downtime, you -- swimmers and parents -- can help us formalize this commitment and earn recognition from USA Swimming as a Safe Sport Recognized Club. How? By completing a free, web-based training session.

In order for the Flying Fish to receive Safe Sport recognition, we need 15 percent of parents and 15 percent of swimmers (age 12-over) to complete this training.
  • For Safe Sport training for swimmers 12-over click here.
  • For Safe Sport training for parents click here.

Our LSC is Illinois Swimming and our club name is YWFF. Parents, if you are not a member of USA Swimming (most of you aren't) you will need to create a free account. Note: The athlete training course takes about 25 minutes and the parent course is slightly longer.

New: As another option, athletes and parents can now attend Zoom meetings conducted by USA Swimming to complete this training. See the links below.

Parents : Every Wednesday 3:00‐4:00pm EST

Lifesaving classes postponed
Our Red Cross lifesaving classes for swimmers age 15-over have been postponed until further notice. We will give you updated information as it becomes available.
Training for officials now online
Parents: If you're interested in becoming an official, you can now become certified by Illinois Swimming though online training. If you're a current official and need to renew, you also can do this online. Learn more here.

Fish out of water
What can you do when you can't swim? We've got ideas:

  • Watch a compelling documentary, narrated by Julianna Margulies, centered on U.S. women swimmers at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Note to parents: There is frank discussion of doping and its effects on the body. Thanks to USA Swimming, you can watch the 90-minute film free here with the password lastgold2016.

  • Help the Flying Fish become a Safe Sport Recognized Club. See above.

  • Learn more about competitive swimming technique. GoSwim is providing free access to its terrific instructional videos right now. All you have to do is create an account with an email address.

Our swimmers also have ideas:

Cate FF
  • Bluefish Cate Jacobsen sewed masks for those on the front lines of the pandemic. Way to go, Cate!
  • Thunderfish Karolien Van Mieghem displayed her artistic talents with this masterpiece in front of her house. Beautiful, Karolien!
