LITERARY LIONS LUNCHEON

Join us on Wednesday, April 22, at the Arts District Mansion for the 2026 Literary Lions Luncheon, our celebration of Dallas’ libraries and the Friends' signature fundraising event.

This year’s featured guest is Eric Klinenberg, acclaimed author of Palaces for the People. Mr. Klinenberg and KERA's Krys Boyd will discuss his work, including his argument that libraries are essential “social infrastructure.” We promise an engaging, thought-provoking program you won’t want to miss.

Sponsorships and tickets are now available. Secure your seat, gather your table, and be part of a powerful afternoon that champions the future of Dallas’ public libraries.

SUPPORT KLEBERG-RYLIE IN ITS TEMPORARY HOME

The Kleberg-Rylie Branch Library, an essential, beloved part of its Southeast Dallas neighborhood, has been closed since January 29, 2026, after a winter storm caused major damage. The Dallas Public Library is setting up a temporary space at the nearby Kleberg-Rylie Recreation Center, with computers, meeting space, programming and a limited collection.

Families depend on these programs for learning, connection and opportunity. The Friends of the Dallas Public Library has pledged $5,000 to support programs, learning and community engagement in this temporary space. Join us in making this temporary home welcoming and inviting. Support today

LIBRARIES ON FILM

J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Lone Star Libraries

The latest segment of Lone Star Libraries from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission features Dallas’ Central Library. Its seventh floor holds two rare treasures, both free to view by the public. The first is an original copy of the Declaration of Independence printed on the night of July 4, 1776, one of only about 25 surviving copies. It’s the only original copy located west of the Mississippi. Nearby, on the same floor, is an even older and equally beloved treasure—an original copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio, published in 1623. Thanks to Library Director Manya Shorr and her team for providing this tour. Check out the episode here.

Last month PBS aired The Librarians, an important documentary film about the battles across the country to ban books from school and public libraries - and the threats against librarians who refuse to do so. The award-winning documentary is now available to stream free. It's 92 minutes well spent. You can read more about the film here, and you can watch it here

And the last word...

Libraries are the kinds of places where people with different backgrounds, passions and interests can take part in a living democratic culture.
