J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Lone Star Libraries
The latest segment of Lone Star Libraries from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission features Dallas’ Central Library. Its seventh floor holds two rare treasures, both free to view by the public. The first is an original copy of the Declaration of Independence printed on the night of July 4, 1776, one of only about 25 surviving copies. It’s the only original copy located west of the Mississippi. Nearby, on the same floor, is an even older and equally beloved treasure—an original copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio, published in 1623. Thanks to Library Director Manya Shorr and her team for providing this tour. Check out the episode here.
Last month PBS aired The Librarians, an important documentary film about the battles across the country to ban books from school and public libraries - and the threats against librarians who refuse to do so. The award-winning documentary is now available to stream free. It's 92 minutes well spent. You can read more about the film here, and you can watch it here.
