Governor Appoints Three New Board Members

Governor Lombardo appointed Sheri Kovac, Kreg Mebust and Coffee Polk to the NSBAIDRD last year. The new appointees replaced three retiring board members. Their terms run through October 2028.

With a BS degree in interior design from UNR, Sheri Kovac has been a registered interior designer since 2010. Serving the greater northern Nevada area as owner and principal of Kovac Design Ltd., she is CIDQ and LEED AP certified and an original 1000 hand-selected global team member of The Climate Reality Project. Kovac is honored and looks forward to the appointed position as the board’s newest registered interior designer.

Kreg Mebust, the board’s new residential designer, has been a licensed landscape architect since 1995 and a residential designer since 2018. He is currently a Professor of Architecture at Truckee Meadows Community College with over 16 years of teaching experience. He is currently on the Higher Education Advisory Teams for both the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB). On the weekends he can be found on his ranch with over 25 equines.

Coffee Polk never expected to become an architect. Following a stint in the film industry working in practical effects, model making, and art departments, she left and earned a Master of Architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and began the path to licensure. Polk was licensed in Nevada in 2018. She has been an NCARB volunteer for many years, including her current position as At-Large Director on NCARB’s Board of Directors. Polk lives in Las Vegas, and enjoys the outdoors, hidden culinary hotspots, and spending time with her husband, not necessarily in that order.

Continuing Education Audits

A percentage of registrants who renewed their licenses for 2026 will be randomly selected for audit of their continuing education units this month. The selected registrants will be notified by email. The notice of audit will explain the audit process and will require a response by a specified date.

Submittals will be reviewed to determine if the continuing education requirements were met. Supporting documentation to prove completion of a course or activity is required. Registrants who fail to meet the requirements will be notified and offered an opportunity to resolve the violation. Registrants who choose not to resolve the violation will be subject to the board’s disciplinary process.

For more information on the continuing education requirement or audit process, please refer to the continuing education page of the board website.

NCARB Updates Education Alternative Pathway, Potentially Shortening Timeline for Some Reciprocity Candidates

Effective January 15, 2026, NCARB retired the three-year waiting period between licensure and NCARB certification eligibility for U.S. architects without a degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The Education Alternative provides a pathway to an NCARB Certificate, and licensure in Nevada, for US architects who do not have a NAAB-accredited degree. Applicants using the Education Alternative pathway must still complete the experience and examination requirements.

Disciplinary Actions

(October 23, 2025 through January 21, 2026)

The board is responsible for investigating alleged violations and enforcing compliance with NRS and NAC 623.

Two cases were submitted for board consideration and approved. There was also one case considered at a formal contested administrative hearing (see following article). Additionally, 11 cases were closed because there was no basis for the allegations or the complaint did not fall within the board's jurisdiction.

The cases below were closed by means of settlement agreement. As part of the agreement respondents agreed to assure compliance with Chapter 623. Should the respondents be involved in a subsequent case and found to have again violated NRS, NAC or Rules of Conduct, the case may be used as an aggravating factor.

Every effort is made to ensure that the following information is correct. Before making any decision based on this information you should contact the NSBAIDRD.

Holding Oneself Out, Advertising, and Unlicensed Practice of Architecture, Registered Interior Design or Residential Design: NRS 623.360.1(a)(b)(c)

Case 26-025N

The allegations against Theodore Reeds and Ted Reeds Architecture, LLC were that they held themselves out as being qualified to provide services that fall under the practice of architecture and engaged in the practice of architecture without having a certificate of registration with the board. The matter was resolved through a settlement agreement incorporating a $8,000 administrative penalty and $1,600 in investigative costs.

Unlicensed Practice of Architecture, Registered Interior Design or Residential Design: NRS 623.360.1(c)

Case 26-024N

The allegations against Jay Yabut and J Interiors were that they engaged in the practices of architecture and residential design without having a certificate of registration with the board. The matter was resolved through a settlement agreement incorporating a public reprimand and restitution.

Formal Contested Administrative Hearing

Board Revokes License, Finds Registrant in Violation of NRS 623.180.1(b) and NRS 623.270.1(g)

Case No. 26-040R

The board found the respondent, Michael Peterson (147-RD), violated NRS 623.270.1(g) by failing to comply with the conditions set out in a June 2024 order from a previous disciplinary case. Additionally, the board found Mr. Peterson violated NRS 623.180.1(b) and NRS 623.270.1(g) by providing services that fall under the practice of residential design when his registration was suspended.

The board revoked the respondent’s certificate of registration and barred him from reapplying for licensure for a period of 10 years. In addition, all outstanding penalties, fees, and costs must be paid in full before any future application will be considered, and the board may impose restrictions on any future license. The respondent was also assessed a $2,000 administrative fine and is responsible for covering all costs and fees associated with the investigation and hearing.
