Advocacy Focus of Statewide Roundtables
The Home Care Workforce Shortage Crisis was the focus of a roundtable discussion conducted by the Area Agency on Aging, PSA 2, on November 15 at the Business Solutions Center in Dayton. The PSA 2, the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging (o4a) and Agencies throughout the state advocate increasing provider reimbursement rates by 50% to help provide a living wage for home care workers. House Bill 45 Budget Impact on Home-Based Services
The Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill 45 in December that included some aging and disability service provisions:
  • $350 million for nursing homes related to workforce relief payments,
  • $10 million for home and community-based services related to the workforce shortage crisis,
  • $8 million to support adult day centers,
  • $50 million for Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) expansion in 6 counties including Montgomery County. 
SNAP Emergency Allotments to End
Emergency allotments to benefit low-income individuals and families during the Covid-19 pandemic are coming to an end. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, a federal law change, no longer allows for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) emergency allotments. The last SNAP emergency allotment will be paid in February 2023 and benefits will be reduced to pre-pandemic amounts beginning in March 2023. Read more here.
Accepting Nominations for Outstanding Senior Citizens
The 2023 Older Americans Month theme Aging Unbound explores diverse aging experiences and discusses how communities can combat stereotypes. The Agency is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award for each of the nine counties in its region: Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby. Service in any field of endeavor should be considered. The deadline for nominations is March 24. Click here for the nomination form and more information.
Winter Heating Help for Older Ohioans
The Ohio Department of Development and the Area Agency on Aging, PSA 2 want to remind older adults in Ohio that assistance is available to help with their home energy bills. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps Ohioans at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines pay their heating bills. Click here to learn more.
Free Tax Help Available
The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. The TCE program offers free tax help, for those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to older adults.
