Mayor Cathy Heron delivered her final State of the City address on June 11 at the Enjoy Centre where she reflected on her 15 years in municipal service and shared key updates about St. Albert’s growth and direction. Some of the highlights included:
Strong Economic Growth and Community Investment:
St. Albert has seen continued investment in residential and commercial development, including five new schools, expanded business parks, and progress on major infrastructure projects like the twinning of Ray Gibbon Drive. These initiatives support both population growth and long-term economic sustainability.
Reduced Commuter Reliance on Edmonton:
Since 2010, the number of residents commuting outside the city for work has dropped from 59% to 43%—a sign of stronger local employment opportunities and business attraction efforts.
Downtown Revitalization and Annexation Planning:
Ongoing work to enhance St. Albert’s downtown and negotiations around land annexation with Sturgeon County are helping shape the City’s future while balancing preservation and progress.
Regional Leadership and Advocacy:
Mayor Heron also highlighted St. Albert’s voice in regional planning, having served in leadership roles with the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board and Alberta Municipalities, ensuring the city’s interests are represented at key decision-making tables.
In an emotional close to her address, Mayor Heron announced that she will not be seeking re-election this fall. While she is stepping away from municipal office for now, she has not ruled out a future return to public service.
