Focusing on Joy

Lancaster City Schools embarked on a new mission this year. We challenged our staff and our communications team to find and showcase positive stories from within our schools and our community that have the power to bring people joy.

This may seem like a relatively easy thing to do, and we hope that it is. But it is also very easy to get caught up in the stresses of life, the trauma of the world, and daily challenges. We have always been proponents of the "Choose Kindness" mindset and we strive to bring positivity into the classroom and to our students. It does take effort to remember to focus on kindness and joy on a daily basis. But, we think it is important. According to a 2022 Gallup poll, people in our country are reporting the highest levels of stress, sadness, physical pain, and worry since 2006. And more than 300 million people report that do not have a friend.

If we chip away at this statistic in our corner of the world, making more people smile, if only for a moment, we would like to accomplish that. Laughter is good for you. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, within the first ten seconds of laughter, fifteen facial muscles contract and relax while stimulation of the zygomatic major muscle (the main lifting mechanism of your upper lip) occurs. Heart rate and pulse elevate; respiration rate and ventilation become irregular as an effect of the epiglottis half-closing the larynx. And twenty seconds of laughter has the ability to double the heart rate for the following three to five minutes.

We hope you are following us on social media and enjoying the joy we are showcasing. If you'd like to send us some happy news, please contact our communications team at SchoolNews@krilecommunications.com.
