Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that recovery from post-exercise weariness is significantly impacted by the timing of nutritional intake?

Findings from a Frontiers in Nutrition study demonstrated that, in comparison to delayed supplementation, protein and carbohydrate supplementation right after exercise dramatically expedited muscle recovery, glycogen recovery, and decreased tiredness.

Standard Blood Work

For a list of standard blood tests for new or existing clients, please go to this page and look at Steve or Bonnie's wellness forms.

Stool Analysis

For gastrointestinal, autoimmune, or allergy-related maladies, stool analysis is a wonderful way to detect how to heal from the inside out.

Genomics Testing

For lifestyle and diet-related genetic predisposition, go to the "Pure Insight" section below.

Food Reaction Testing

Because true food allergies are rare, please Email Steve or Bonnie for authorization to get our IgE food allergy, IgE mold/fungus allergy, or celiac panel. For questions about the tests and how to prepare, contact our office staff.

Infection Support

For Prevention or During Infection

Year-round infection is the new normal. We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 2.0 Protocol here.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. A recent analysis of methyl B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. Aman was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie Minsky

Infection Update

Steve: A gentle reminder that infections pose a threat all year round now. Here's the latest you need to be aware of with regard to infections.

MTHFR (Folate) Gene A preprint study from Medrxiv found that patients homozygous (double mutation) for the MTHFR C677T gene have higher incidence of experiencing severe COVID-19. The results suggest screening for the common genetic MTHFR variant may be an actionable approach to gauge risk of COVID severity with an actionable treatment strategy.

Flu Antivirals

Antivirals recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for treating influenza showed little benefit for nonsevere cases in a study from JAMA Internal Medicine. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) also had little to no effect on mortality, hospitalization rates, or symptom duration. Peramivir (Rapivab) had little to no impact on mortality rates and symptom duration.

Vitamin D

Researchers publishing in Nutrients examined the impact of vitamin D deficiency and moderately high-dose vitamin D3 supplementation on mortality and disease outcomes in patients with COVID-19 infection. As a result of the vitamin D3 supplementation, deficiency was resolved in 4 days in deficient patients. Mortality was significantly lower and decreased 67% in the group receiving vitamin D3 supplementation, regardless of blood level concentrations.

COVID-19 Antiviral

Treatment with Paxlovid in older adults did not appear to make a difference in whether or not they were hospitalized because of COVID-19, according to a JAMA Network Open study.

Probiotics

A probiotic mixture containing three specific strains reduced fever duration by two days in children with upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). According to the JAMA Network Open study, the treatment showed significant efficacy with a median fever duration of 3 days versus 5 days for placebo.

A study from Nutrients found another probiotic mix effectively alleviated cold symptoms and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels compared with placebo.

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)

An antioxidant-rich diet could help reduce the risk of EBV infection, especially in persons age 6-19 years. According to researchers in Frontiers in Nutrition, six dietary antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, carotenoid, selenium, and zinc reduce oxidative stress, which is closely related to EBV infection, latency, reactivation, and transformation.

Zinc

A study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that zinc deficiency was observed in 28.6% of children with COVID-19 and was not dependent on age. Children with hypozincemia had higher levels of inflammation markers, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and CRP.

Tuberculosis

A nutrition supplement package improved the clinical symptoms (i.e. chest pain and expectoration) and alleviated undernutrition (i.e. anemia and hypoproteinemia) compared with placebo among tuberculosis patients, according to a study from Food and Function.

Breastfeeding

Full breastfeeding for six months and continued breastfeeding for at least one year was associated with a lower risk of subsequent infant respiratory tract infections and hospitalization from them, according to a study from European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Case Report

Collegiate Athlete in Distress

A 20 year-old female collegiate athlete came to see Steve. She had extreme gastrointestinal distress and could not eat anything without becoming nauseous. This would cause her to not eat for long periods of time, which caused acidic vomiting. She could not function without consistently taking anti-nausea medication. She was not having a menstrual cycle, but was still anemic. The way she felt was greatly impeding her ability to participate in her collegiate sport.

Steve spoke frankly with her about the difficulty of trying to get her to heal while playing a grueling collegiate water sport, but they would see how much progress could be made. Steve was also very honest with her that getting back to normalcy would not be quick, but a long slog. But if she put the work in, she would see results.

After vastly modifying her eating schedule, foods that she was consuming, adding supplemental nutrients, using special at-home vagus nerve stimulation exercises, and stress management techniques, she saw modest improvement. However, after four months, she could not practice in full, had to be so careful dietarily that she could not travel with the team, and still had to rely on anti-nausea medication.

She and Steve met again, and he gave her three scenarios:

1) Continue as is with the diet and go on stronger GI medication the gastroenterologist prescribed to see if that would help.

2) Take the season off because Steve believed the training and bacteria from the water would not allow her to heal fully.

3) Retire from her sport entirely.

She opted for scenario #2.

Since she took the season off to heal, in her own words: "I've been doing so good making crazy progress the last few weeks with my eating. I just felt so normal I wanted to cry. I've been eating at the cafeteria lately without any issues. I still have progress to make I know, but I was just thinking a lot yesterday about it. The past month I've just seen so much improvement and so fast and I wanted to share."

She does not have to rely on anti-nausea meds, is back to moderate physical activity, and does not have to be draconian with her eating.

Chiro Corner NEW!

Helping the Entire Family

I am always moved by Chiropractic success stories and recently read an account of a boy named Danny. He had a really rough year with his asthma, strep throat and a bad wheeze. He was put on antibiotics, and 2 inhalers. His asthma started at age two and since then he never could breathe well.

The wheeze was still there even with the two inhalers. Danny’s Tae Kwan Do instructor recommended his chiropractor. His own son had asthma and bouts of step throat, which cleared up with chiropractic care. By the third adjustment Danny told the chiropractor, “My asthma is gone!”

After receiving care for a month Danny went to his grandparents home where they have a long haired dog. Normally he would wheeze for a week or two, yet he was adjusted after being around the dog and his wheezing only lasted one day. Danny’s hyperactivity improved as well as his school work and his general state of happiness.

This prompted his parents to bring in their daughter for her scoliosis. Danny’s mother decided to come in too from an old whiplash injury that left her with constant ear pain. That improved so Danny’s father decided to come in as he always woke up in pain due to two broken vertebrae. Now he wakes up pain free. The family is so thankful to Chiropractic for improving their health in so short a time.
