Last week a group of experienced weavers gathered in our fiber studio to learn täkänä weaving with Phyllis Fredendall, who studied the technique in Finland. Not only did students weave täkänä themselves, they also studied historical examples from the Finnish American Historical Archive and from private collections. Hands-on experience of the technique made everyone appreciate the skill that went into making those archival pieces even more deeply.

Finnish American Heritage Center

Independence Day Program

Thursday, December 5, 2024 @ 5:30pm

We hope you'll join us for our annual observance of Finland's Independence Day. This year's event at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock will feature a group performance by the Copper Country Singers, Kivajat Dancers, Ilon Kaiku Kantele Ensemble, and Copper Country Suzuki Association violinists. We're pleased to bring multiple generations of musicians and dancers together as we mark 107 years of Finnish independence.

The event will also include keynote speaker Fern Malila and the announcement of the 2025 Hankookin Heikki. Following the program, you're invited to stay and join us in the Finlandia Art Gallery for the opening reception of the Friends of Finland Art Exhibition at 6:30pm.
