Greetings!
ACVS hosted a town hall session for Diplomates during the 2025 Surgery Summit in Seattle. The town hall gave Diplomates an overview of the proposed governance change that will separate certification functions from membership activities, outlined what the new governance structure (PDF) would look like, and—most importantly—provided space for open questions and feedback from members.
During the town hall, ACVS leadership shared why a governance change is being considered now, how the proposed structure would clarify roles and responsibilities, and some long-term benefits of separating certification functions from membership activities.
Key questions from members
The live question-and-answer session raised important questions. Members were particularly interested in how the financial separation between the Certification Council and the Board of Regents would work given the Board of Regents will retain fiduciary responsibility for ACVS, including certification. Another question was how membership categories and eligibility would be defined in the new structure. We have added two articles to the ACVS website to provide more detail and clarity on these questions.
Continue the conversation
ACVS is committed to openness and transparency throughout this process. Member input is essential as ACVS continues to share updates about the proposed governance change. To further support two-way dialogue with members, ACVS has created a new Governance Updates and Questions discussion group in ACVS Connect. I encourage you to join the group. There, Diplomates can:
- Review proposed governance and bylaws updates
- Ask questions and share perspectives about proposed updates
- Engage directly with leaders and fellow members on governance topics
ACVS will continue to provide regular updates as we move through the governance change process. For additional background, we encourage you to view the recorded governance change information sessions, if you were unable to attend. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at aseery@acvs.org, (301) 916-0200 x106, or in the new Governance Updates and Questions discussion group in ACVS Connect.
Sincerely,
Adam Seery, CAE
