Hot Industry Issues!:

FOOD PRODUCT LIABILITY

Bone In Meat

Product liability resulting from foreign objects in food and beverage products represents one of the largest threats to brand equity. One of the most common foreign objects in meat and poultry processing is bone fragments. Fortuately food processors have x-ray bone detection machines available that show the bone fragment (in red above) so that it can be removed before a consumer eats it. But unfortunately many processors have not seen the need, or felt the urgency to invest in this new technology to preserve their brand equity, and/or save insurance and legal costs.

Metal detectors are now required for all food manufacturing companies, but not bone detectors. Food Technical Solutions is available to assist plaintif or defense attorneys fight for safe foods for consumers.

What are voluntary recalls?

A food and beverage company may announce and conduct a voluntary recall to protect the public from products that may cause health problems or possible death. A recall is intended to remove food products from commerce when there is reason to believe the products may be adulterated or misbranded.

Voluntary recalls have averaged almost 25 each month during 2010. Let's face it, many voluntary recalls result from sloppy manufacturing and quality assurance processes - to put it another way - a lack of process discipline.
