LUM Celebrates Expanded Food Pantry Hours

LUM Increase Local Community Food Access

LUM hosted a successful open house to celebrate the expansion of the LUM Protein Food Pantry operating hours to Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings. This addresses a critical gap in local food services, especially on Mondays when few pantries are open, and reinforces LUM's commitment to combating food insecurity locally.

LUM Executive Director Wes Tillett delivered heartfelt remarks, calling the event "bittersweet," adding that “The part we like to focus on is that there are people stepping up to help.

The new Monday afternoon hours have already attracted 60 shoppers weekly, alongside 80 shoppers on Thursdays. During the open house, West Lafayette Mayor Erin Easter praised LUM for increasing food access in the community. The event provided a welcoming atmosphere for VIPs and shoppers alike, with tours, refreshments, and a blessing from St. John’s Rector Bradley Pace. Guests enjoyed Arni’s famous pizza, donated for the occasion, and local media coverage to further amplify the LUM mission.

Please consider investing in and engaging with the LUM Protein Food Pantry. Donations and volunteers are needed weekly. To view PHOTOS, click HERE.

Six Ways to Celebrate Hunger Action Month

Unique Ways to Support LUM Food Programs

September is National Hunger Action Month, an initiative that highlights the reality of food insecurity while giving everyone the chance to take action to fight against hunger. The LUM Food Pantry needs your support this fall & winter. Here are SIX WAYS YOU can help LUM while celebrating National Hunger Action Month.

  1. DONATIONS – Monetary donations are ideal because the money will be used where it is needed the most.
  2. NEEDED ITEMS – Families need paper products, cleaning supplies, infant products, and personal hygiene items. Purchase needed items and drop items off or shop online and ship them. Go to Amazon.com, shop from the LUM Wish List, order & ship to LUM.
  3. HOST A DRIVE – Coordinate a “drive” for the LUM Food Pantry at your church, organization, or business — or at your next event like a birthday or company social. Check the LUM Wish List and keep it simple.
  4. FOOD RESCUE – LUM needs volunteers to “rescue” food from local restaurants, bakeries & grocery stores. Please help us save, gather, and share food with our neighbors in need. It’s a win-win-win – RESCUE food, SHARE food & REDUCE food waste.
  5. HUNGER HIKE – Participate in Hunger Hike on Sunday, September 22 and raise funds for food programs locally, regionally & globally.
  6. GIVING GARDENERS – The LUM Food Pantry welcomes donations from “Giving Gardeners” who have “grown a row” for LUM or simply wish to donate from their garden.

You are also encouraged to WEAR ORANGE to celebrate and raise awareness for National Hunger Action Month. If you have questions or need further information, go to LUMserve.org/food-pantry, call 765-423-2691 or email foodpantry@LUMserve.org.
