All the latest BPJCC SCN program information in one place, offering better communication, better knowledge, and better nutritional health.

Update PHS/SIPPS Program

PHS Update (11204, 11218, 11230 & other Brooklyn ZIP Codes)

Effective August 5, new PHS guidelines allow approval only for individually eligible Enhanced Members. Going forward, household members can not be included under another participant's authorization unless they also independently qualify as Enhanced Members.

If you currently have an active authorization and are receiving food benefits, this change will not take effect until your current authorization expires.

Please note that changing your insurance requires a new authorization. As a result, household members who are not independently eligible will no longer be included, and there may be a temporary gap in services during the reauthorization process.

SIPPS (11219 and Staten Island Update)

Effective August 1, new SIPPS guidelines allow approval only for individually eligible Enhanced Members. Going forward, household members can not be included under another participant's authorization unless they also independently qualify as Enhanced Members.

If you currently have an active authorization and are receiving food benefits, this change will not take effect until your current authorization expires.

Please note that changing your insurance or changing from food boxes to food vouchers requires a new authorization.

As a result, household members who are not independently eligible will no longer be included, and there will be a temporary gap in services during the reauthorization process.

Under the latest guidance, only a limited number of organizations have been authorized to continue providing this service. BPJCC is pleased to be one of them.

As announced last week, BPJCC SCN participants are receiving exclusive early access to our Back-to-School event before it opens to the public next week.

Romaine Calm... Your Produce Can Last!

Tip From Our Dietitian

Fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, but they can spoil quickly if they're not stored properly. Learning a few simple storage tips can help your produce stay fresh longer, reduce food waste, and save money.

Not all produce should be stored the same way. Tomatoes, peaches, nectarines, and unripe avocados should be kept at room temperature until they ripen. Once ripe, most fruits can be refrigerated to help extend their freshness. Leafy greens, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, mushrooms, and many other vegetables should be stored in the refrigerator.

Excess moisture is one of the biggest reasons produce spoils. If you wash lettuce or other leafy greens before storing them, dry them thoroughly with a salad spinner or clean kitchen towel. Then place a dry paper towel in the storage container to absorb extra moisture. This simple step can help greens stay fresh much longer.

Some reusable produce storage containers are designed to improve air circulation and reduce moisture buildup, which may also help extend freshness. Even without special containers, keeping produce clean, dry, and stored correctly can make a noticeable difference.

A few small changes in how you store your produce can help you enjoy more fresh fruits and vegetables while reducing waste and getting the most from your grocery budget.

Budget-Friendly Ideas

Throwing away spoiled produce also means throwing away money.

A few simple habits can help your groceries last longer.

  • Store older produce in the front of the refrigerator so you use it first.
  • Keep leafy greens dry. If you wash them before storing, dry them well and place a dry paper towel in the container to absorb excess moisture.
  • Freeze ripe fruit such as bananas, peaches, or mango before it becomes overripe. It's perfect later for smoothies or baking.
  • Revive limp carrots or celery by placing them in ice water for about 30 minutes.
  • A few simple storage habits can help your produce stay fresh longer, reduce food waste, and stretch your grocery budget.

Simple Healthy Tip

First In, First Out

When you unpack your groceries, move older fruits and vegetables to the front of the refrigerator and place the newer items behind them.

This simple habit, often called "First In, First Out," makes it easier to use older produce before it spoils. It's an easy way to reduce food waste, save money, and make sure you are enjoying your fruits and vegetables at their freshest.

New Q&A

Question

If one family member is eligible for SCN, does that make the entire family eligible?

Answer

Under the current SIPPS and PHS guidance, family members of a qualifying participant are not automatically eligible for SCN services. Each individual must have qualifying insurance coverage and independently meet eligibility criteria.

Family members who do not meet those criteria may continue receiving services only if they were authorized before August 1. Once the qualifying participant's current authorization period expires, those family members will no longer be eligible to participate in the program.

Previous Relevant Q&A

Question

I have been on the BPJCC SCN program for two months now. How can I check if I am eligible for the free housewares benefit?

Answer

All BPJCC SCN Program participants currently receiving food services can be eligible after being screened to receive a one-time housewares benefit, including a free full refrigerator/freezer and microwave.

Our BPJCC SCN team is working through the list of eligible participants as quickly and efficiently as possible.

If you haven't heard from us yet, there's no need to worry and no need to call. We will reach out soon.
