Dear BPJCC,
I would like to express my appreciation for the SCN Grocery Voucher Program and share how much of a positive impact it has had on my life.
With the cost of living continuing to rise, it has become increasingly difficult to manage everyday expenses. Between expensive rent, childcare costs, and rising grocery prices, it can be very challenging to make ends meet. So much of my income goes toward basic necessities, leaving very little room in the budget.
BPJCC's SCN Grocery Program has helped ease some of this financial pressure. Saving money on groceries has made a real difference in my budget and helped me stretch my money further. The savings let me put more toward other essential expenses, such as rent and childcare, while still providing food for my family.
Beyond the financial savings, this program provides peace of mind during a time when so many families are struggling with the high cost of living. It is comforting to know a community center understands the challenges families face and offers meaningful, practical support.
I am truly grateful to BPJCC for providing this assistance.
With sincere appreciation,
E.B.- A Grateful Participant

SOUP SEASON
Build a Better Bowl
| |
What Makes Soup a Meal?
Soup can be warm, comforting, and nutritious, but not every bowl is enough to keep you satisfied for very long. A broth with a few vegetables or noodles may taste good, but it may not provide enough protein, fiber, or energy to carry you to the next meal.
A more satisfying soup usually includes three important ingredients vegetables, protein, and a filling carbohydrate. For example, chicken with barley and vegetables; lentils with sweet potato and carrots; or beans with rice and tomatoes. Using a little olive oil can add flavor and make the soup feel more satisfying.
Protein helps with fullness and provides essential building blocks for the body. Fiber-rich vegetables, beans, lentils, and whole grains slow digestion and add staying power.
Carbohydrates like potatoes, rice, barley, pasta, or corn provide energy and make the bowl feel more complete.
Soup is also a great way to combine all of these foods in one dish. You can use leftover chicken, cooked grains, beans, frozen vegetables, or produce that needs to be used up. And because everything cooks together, the flavors often get better as the soup simmers.
The best soups do more than warm you up, they give you enough protein, fiber, vegetables, and energy to leave you feeling satisfied long after the bowl is empty.

One of the Vest Ways to Stretch Ingredients
Soup is especially useful when you have small amounts of food that are not enough for a full meal on their own. A little leftover chicken, half a bag of carrots, a cup of cooked rice, or a can of beans can become several servings once combined with broth, vegetables, and grains.
You can also use less expensive ingredients like lentils, beans, potatoes, barley, and frozen vegetables to make the pot more filling without needing a large amount of meat or fish.
|
Make Your Soup Thicker Without Heavy Cream
If you want a creamy soup, you don't always need cream or heavy ingredients. Simply blend part of the soup and stir it back in.
Beans, potatoes, lentils, squash, or cauliflower can all create a thicker, creamier texture while adding fiber and nutrients. This works especially well in tomato soup, potato soup, bean soup, or vegetable soup.
