On September 14th after a historic Contra Costa County Board of Supervisor vote, Urban Tilth made history by becoming the first permanent farm in Richmond, CA. We began this part of our journey in 2012, when we first submitted a proposal to steward this 3 acre vacant County owned lot. Our dream then was to secure a long term lease so we could enter into a much deeper long term relationship with land. Access to all of our other garden locations is tenuous. Between year to year access agreements, MOUs and Adopt-a-Spots none allowed us to build the kind of infrastructure necessary to truly impact the scale of food insecurity in our community.

These short term uncommitted relationships also made it difficult for us to imagine taking the time we needed to invest in growing soil and truly nurturing all of the life cycles in the land so the food we would eventually grow would be itself full of life. After working with the county to amend the general plan for North Richmond to allow for urban agriculture and negotiating ...

A Practice in Communal Healing
We sometimes hear the city of Richmond described as a “refinery town”. For those who live here, we feel the impact of the fossil fuel industry in and on our bodies and on the land we live on. We want our community to make the connections between Climate Change that is intensifying our wildfire seasons, and the fossil fuel industry that has had a harmful impact on our respiratory, nervous, immune and digestive systems for over 100 years.
This is where the Richmond Our Power Coalition Wildfire Kit Project was born. This project brought the 9 organizations of our Coalition together to plan, procure, prepare and distributed 500 fire kits with herbs ...

Complete a Clean Air Survey!

Help us map sources of air pollution and protect the health of Richmond residents
During the month of October, Urban Tilth has been reaching out to Richmond and San Pablo residents to map sources of air pollution in our neighborhoods. The surveys will assist the Air District in strengthening and targeting air pollution reduction strategies. Surveys have been administered by Urban Tilth staff during Free Farm Stands, Volunteer Days, the UNITY Park Roller Disco event and during community canvassing around North Richmond and the Richmond Greenway. Our team has generally received a warm welcome from community members happy to share their thoughts on the subject.
