Summer Apprentice Program 2018
Orientation Week

Urban Tilth has hired 40 youth to learn about urban agriculture in our Summer Apprentice Program. This program educates and trains youth to become leaders in our community. The Summer Apprentice Program is a rare opportunity for West County youth to join a dynamic and positive group of their peers for a life changing summer of intensive urban agriculture training, community engagement, mind-opening field trips and paid summer employment.

During the course of this intensive 6-week program, youth learn to work together to grow fresh, healthy, organic food for our community while developing meaningful life skills.

Orientation Week of Urban Tilth’s Summer Apprentice Program is in the books! We spent the week learning about each other, building community, and getting our hands dirty in the garden! Workshops included emotional literacy, conflict resolution, composting, propagation, tool safety, and sheet mulching!

Thank you to The California Endowment, Chorus Foundation, The San Francisco Foundation and The Thomas Long Foundation for your support of this life-changing, healthy and active living, leadership building program. Stay tuned over the next 6 weeks for more reports from this summer!

Richmond People’s Assembly
A REPORT BACK

Thank you so much for contributing to the Richmond People’s Assembly this past May 19th!

We wanted to give a special shout out to the 200+ community members who showed up in person and helped contribute real solutions with real solidarity for our community!

Community members enjoyed a FREE breakfast and lunch, got resource information, walked a way with a unique Richmond Peoples’ Assembly artwork, and contributed to organizing for real solutions with real solidarity for our neighborhoods! We also wanted to thank the 1000+ community members who contributed to our community survey about what has been impacting you in the last year and give a quick report back on how the assembly went and how you can join upcoming events and get involved with our efforts.

We found the top issues presently impacting our community are displacement from our homes, local health, environment, discrimination and a need to re-imagine what real safety in our community is. In response to the surveys, we invited community groups actively and/or interested in working on the pressing issues surveyed to lead breakout groups to reimagine safety in our neighborhoods and schools, a dedicated youth track, citizens police review commission, eradicating homelessness, fighting displacement - local pollution including illegal dumping, and cooperative work and a know your rights workshop. The Our Power Coalition wants to be a place where community members can stay in touch with each-other and organize for community power. Stay in touch with the coalition on Facebook @ourpowerrichmond to learn about upcoming events in your area!

We will be continuing to put together a report that will place our community voice in writing, and have a summer of events community members.
