A good (Anglo-Catholic) priest (and Rector)
"In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ's people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come."

Dear people of Ascension,
When I consider, which I sometimes do, if so-and-so is a good priest, a particular question often arises: “Would I want him or her to be present at the hour of my death?” Those on my good priest list are at home with reverent silence, but their ‘spirituality’ is also equal to the awkwardness, sorrow and difficult questions that often accompany dying and death. I know them to be intimate with the Holy One, allowing them to also be, as I know it, a midwife at the other end of life.
I likely won’t care then if the priest shows up wearing a cassock or a necktie, or if the proper rites are said from memory, or from what seminary he or she graduated. I’ll want holy oil to be administered, but if it was mistakenly left back at the church, oh well. Other things will soon be more important to me.
Some of you are already wondering aloud about finding and calling a good priest to be your next rector. Of course you will want someone who comprehends, has taken to heart and wishes to embody, share and celebrate Ascension’s Anglo-Catholic tradition and witness. Oh … should I also mention a high regard for and a commitment to Ascension's ministry of music?
But what else? How about pastoral care? Or communications, ministering in an urban setting, parking lots, lawsuits, welcoming newcomers, relationships with staff? How about participation in the life and leadership of the diocese? What about continuing to nudge, pester and plead with you about better connecting with our neighbors and serving those in need?
A successful call of your next rector will partly begin, I imagine, with your general agreement about what the ministry of a good priest might look like here in this unique place and for your next chapter together. The formal rector search won’t begin for a while but it may be a better process if you have already formed some ideas – perhaps even expanded or revised them – and done so with thoughtfulness, realism and prayers.

Yes! But who is Eric Canales?! Eric was our 'help desk tech expert' for Sunday's annual meeting. He makes a living by way of his tech and help desk skills and has also been regularly sharing in the live-stream tech responsibilities at Ascension since late November. Please greet him sometime if you have a chance, and ... welcome Eric!

Join the Conversation:
Anglican and Episcopal? Anglo-Catholic?
For the last of our conversation series together, we will end with a Q & A re-cap of what we have learned over the past several weeks as well as discuss what yet remains to be learned. We’ll review Anglican and Episcopal identity, Anglo-Catholic spirituality past and present, and how we continue to be church in a post-modern world. Please join us and come prepared with questions and wonderings you might have.
Our conversation takes place again via Zoom at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, even if you haven’t been able to attend all (or any!) of our sessions so far.
We'll end at 8:30 p.m. with Compline.
