Hope Nottingham

Bulletin for our wonderful

food bank referrers

Issue 3: December 2024

We cannot support local people in crisis without you!

Merry Christmas from Hope Nottingham

Welcome to the latest edition of our Referrer's Bulletin.

Firstly we want to thank you for your ongoing support this year.

There are many in our local communities whose circumstances require emergency food support, especially over the winter months when utility bills increase. Hope Nottingham and Trussell are committed to the referral model to ensure the right people receive food parcel support but also that those referred are accessing wider help to avoid longer term foodbank dependency. Your support as a referrer is key, so please read on for how we can work effectively together to provide effective and holistic support to those in need.

Every blessing

Foodbank Christmas opening dates

Please be aware our food banks will have revised over Christmas and New Year opening hours. We ask that you check our Christmas and New Year opening times and locations before issuing E-vouchers and advise those you are referring appropriately.

Due to limited opening hours (and some locations being closed)please consider whether you need to make referrals slightly earlier than usual to allow guests to collect food parcels at a suitable time and location.

Mount Zion (Radford) food bank location change

We have had some guests struggle to find the Mount Zion food bank in it's amended location at the Evangelical Free Church, so have renamed it on our system.

Please do check those referred know the correct location details (pictured) which is on the corner of Bramcote Street and St Peter's Street, Radford.

You can view the location on Google Maps here or use What3Words code:

(Please note this is 15 minute walk from our previous site on Churchfield Lane)

Ways you can really help us

We are committed to Trussell's referral model for emergency food support. Food donations are declining year on year and we must all act as good stewards of our resources - ensuring food support gets to the right people at the right time. Critically this also means ensuring those accessing emergency food provision are receiving support, advice and assistance to address the reasons behind their need for food.

Please help us support our guests by:

Encouraging guests to access advice

We know that many of our referrers provide professional advice to guests. However, did you know that many of our food banks also have on-site advice provision for guests with food bank referrals? (Please note that these are not general advice outreach sessions, can only be accessed by guests with food parcel referrals, and operate on a first come first serve basis). Being able to access benefits or debt advice within a foodbank session can be a very effective way of ensuring guests are fully supported. Our food banks offer advice provision at the following times:

Tuesday

Carlton (The Ark Advice Centre) 12- 2.30pm,

Radford Mt Zion (Bestwood Advice Centre)10am -12noon

Wednesday

Beeston (Citizens Advice) 9.30am - 12noon

Broxtowe (Citizens Advice) 10am - 12noon

Netherfield (The Ark Advice centre)1.30 - 3pm

Thursday

Aspley (Citizens Advice) 10am -12noon

Beeston (Citizens Advice) 9.30am - 12noon

Sneinton (Bestwood Advice Centre) 10am - 12noon

Friday

Meadows (Bestwood Advice Centre) 10am-12noon

Contacting us about repeat referrals

If you have issued more than 3 referrals in any 6-month period to the same household, and need to refer again, please call us to discuss the situation. Guests needing multiple referrals require more proactive support. For example, have they been signposted to receive a benefits check or help with debt advice? We can discuss with you what appropriate help may be available.

Asking guests to bring bags with them

Food parcels can be heavy to carry. We usually prepack our parcels into carrier bags ready for our guests, but it is always helpful if guests can bring their own bags with them to the food bank.

Checking your account details

If you are a less frequent user of the Trussell system to issue emergency food vouchers, it is a good idea to regularly log in - as after a period of inactivity the system will lock your account. If this happens, please contact us using the details below.

Please could all referrers also check the users registered to their account on the Trussell system to ensure agency users are still current, including names, job titles and email addresses etc being up to date. Agency Managers can update, remove or add any users as necessary. Please contact us if you need any assistance.

Food donations

Winter is our busiest time of year and our network of 14 food banks across Nottingham rely on the generosity of donors to keep the shelves stocked.

We are hugely grateful for the many organisations that host collection points in their premises or organise food collections to support our food banks.

Could your organisation host a regular food donation point for our food banks in your office? Or organise a seasonal collection to support our work? January and February are particularly low level donation months for us but often higher demand. Is your organisation looking for a 'charity of the year' to support? We'd love to hear from you!

How can we help you?

Read our updated Referrer's Handbook

Our Referrer's Handbook has full details of the Trussell Trust and Hope Nottingham referral process. You can access the Handbook here. Please ensure any new users you add to your account have read the handbook before issuing vouchers.

Tell us how we are doing

We love to hear how we are doing, especially about the great efforts of our foodbank volunteers. We have a feedback form on our website, and will always pass on praise where praise is due, to our army of volunteers, and address anything that may need improvement.
