Fools of Misrule Twelfth Night

Saturday, January 8th, Downtown CovLA

Witnessing the absence of proper Twelfth Night merrymaking on the Northshore, the St. John Fools of Misrule was formed to announce the arrival of the Carnival season to St. Tammany Parish. The organization’s rituals are derived from an ancient English men’s group that clamored along the evening streets creating unruliness with cowbells and whips while delivering jeers and spankings to those caught on the street unaware. The Fools of Misrule integrated into its name homage to the historic St. John District of old Covington (1813) where the group was founded and annually conducts its bawdy procession.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Coastal will collect bare trees inside the city limits the week of Jan 10^th – Jan 14^th. Please have your tree out to the curb by 5am the morning of Monday January 10^th if you would like it to be picked up and recycled.

Trees must be stripped of all decorations —ornaments, lights, tinsel, bags, etc. and the stands must be removed completely to be eligible for the program. Flocked trees cannot be accepted. Trees unable to meet this criteria will also be picked up, just not recycled. Trees may also be dropped off at the Parish Fairgrounds (same criteria apply).

Utility Wires Dangling or on the Ground?

Like some of you, I find the communication line remnants from Ida bothersome. Last week I submitted 80 + such messes to Charter Spectrum and AT&T (plus one to CLECO). Each company has typically been responsive although it usually takes a couple of weeks.

Our Public Works Department has been removing that clutter which was safe to handle. As always, a big thanks to them.

That's Just Plain Silly

Well, yes it is.

OnStage in Covington is a cultural series of 4 to 5 performances at the Fuhrmann Auditorium each year.

The Cultural Arts and Events Department brings in talent from across the United States … tribute acts such as John Denver, Neil Diamond, Patsy Kline and Motown. World class magicians. The Christmas special Celtic Angels.

And yes, even ventriloquists. Featured on television shows including Late Night with Jay Leno, David Letterman, episodes of "Walker, Texas Ranger" and specials with Penn and Teller, the Oak Ridge Boys, and America's Got Talent, Todd Oliver is a funny man.

Patrick Motel

Gibson Street

The Patrick Motel was built in 1895 on Gibson Street (prior to the construction of the railroad track). Pictured below, it is the two story white building behind the trees. Originally called the Commercial Hotel, it was built by Mr. and Mrs. Domergue. Mr. Domergue had previously served as a steward on the New Camellia schooner that traversed Lake Ponchartrain.

Years later, the building would become home to Hebert's Cleaners. The first floor collapsed during the tornado of November, 1997.

It was reported that the people inside on the first floor were saved from being crushed by the second floor when a refrigerator held up the second story, giving them enough space to escape.
