Seasonal Synergy: Football Season
Party Food/Drinks, Friends/Family & High Emotional Environments |
The kick off of football season this year came with the much-needed relief in the weather that South Carolinians have been waiting for. I can honestly say that opening day reminded me of everything I love and hate about this season: I love the food, the fun, the family and friends gathering. I love the anticipation and the joy and the celebrating and the laughter. However, I cannot say the same about the indigestion, the arguments between opposing fans, the freeflow of alcohol that can fuel emotional outbreaks, or the attachment to the outcome of games that can inflate or deflate the people I'm around that can ruin days and sometimes relationships during the season.
I was around a campfire last night with the change in the weather so cool, it felt like late October. In a mixed group, with differing interests and values, favorite teams, favorite foods, favorite music...we talked and laughed without one issue arising...but it's early in the season...less on the line with statistics right now. I thought how different this environment was than the one I grew up in...one where every weekend was ruined when my high school team was losing all season, LSU was having one of the worst seasons they'd ever had, and the professional football team my parents loved went 1-11 that year as well. I was raised by people who cared deeply about the outcome of these games and were emotionally affected by their performances. There was screaming at televisions, screaming at each other if multiple teams' fans were in attendance, and brooding for hours afterwards by those whose teams lost and gloating by the winning teams' fans. The food was always heavy or worse...it was simply nutrient-deficient. There was always too much alcohol as the day wore on. With losing teams competing all weekend, the football season depression went on for days or weeks. Bottom line: for me, it was a recipe for digestive upset.
How do we combat the effects of overindulgence & high emotions during this season? Can we be intentional about how we consume our entertainment, collective food, and still have boundaries that allow us to gather peacefully during collective events? Can we let go of our differences in real-time to maintain our relationships in real-time when we don't see eye to eye? In this week's newsletter, we discuss the Metal element, our relationships with self and others, the idea that community is the new currency, facial massages, cryochambers and more in the Season of Letting Go.

Echoes of Ancient Wisdom: The Metal Element
The Metal Element in Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine
This week, we dive into the Element of Metal (Season of Autumn.) We will explore the correspondences that make up this Element and talk about the significance of honoring what we value and the ability to let go of what is too toxic to hold onto.
The Correspondences of the Metal Element
All of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water) govern yin/yang meridians (organ systems and their collateral channels and deep pathways,) Direction, Season, Weather, Outward Manifestions, Inward Manifestions, Color, Emotions, Spirits, Activities or Labors, Tastes, Tissues, Spiritual Growth Themes, Smells, & Sounds.
The Metal Element governs all things involved with the first things we do when we are born: breathing and pooping (and affecting so much in between.) It's Yin/Yang Meridians are the Lung & the Large Intestine. It's Direction is West, which mimics the dryer environments we have in the Western US, as compared to the humidity of the Southeast or cold of the North. It's season is Fall (Autumn.)
The weather of Autumn is DRY...and that dryness can be felt in our bodies externally through our skin and internally from our mucosal passages to our bowels. The Metal Element governs the sensory organ of the nose, and the outward manifestations of both the skin and body hair, with dryness playing a major role in inflammatory conditions and our levels of comfort when interacting with the outside world. Most of us understand what it feels like to have a dry cough, dry nasal passages, dry hair and skin, and have had dryness affect our ability to move our bowels smoothly.
Its color correspondence is white, like the ghost white color we turn when we hear we hear something that initially takes our breath away. It's taste is pungent or acrid like the spices we add to our chilli, grilled vegetables and other warming dishes we bring to the party. The smell is Rank...like our bathrooms when we have too many people in the house at one time. The sound of Metal is Weeping, which you can hear when people cry when their teams lose, or have other reasons to grieve. It governs what we value, what is precious to us, what inspires us and what we hold onto. The Metal element reminds us it's as important to exhale as inhale, and to let go of things that no longer serve us. By eliminating waste through the bowels, we are made fresh again.
The Spirit Metal governs is that of the Po (Corporeal Soul) and the emotion it governs is that of Grief. The Corporeal Soul is what gives us our sense of self as it relates to the outside world. That sense that you're falling in your sleep or when you know not to step off the sidewalk before you see why, or even the sense that you're being watched without seeing who is watching you...that's your Po.
The labor of this Element: Laying Down. For many people, all we can do is lay down when we can't breathe or poop.
The spiritual growth it governs is that of Reaping. We reap what we sow. We exchange oxygen to carbon dioxide when we inhale and exhale. We take the last bit of water and minerals before we eliminate our bowels of waste. And finally, we reap what we sow in our interactions with people in the world. We get out exactly what we put in.

Technological Advances in Healthcare

Recently, I fell directly on the ground from a standing position when I lost my balance on my porch, injuring the sacral foramen above my tailbone. Bone pain is excruciating. This affected walking, sleeping, moving in any direction, sitting, standing, and my mood.
The first part of the treatment did not go as I had planned, and not for any reason caused by Restore, as they explained everything in detail before I entered, and they stayed throughout the experience to guide me the entire time. I forgot that I was claustrophobic. I had a strategy for handling cold, not small. While the cryochamber therapy lasts three minutes, I couldn't make it through the first thirty seconds because I hadn't prepared myself for being in a small space. The employee attending me let me out immediately when I asked her to, allowed me to sit and develop a strategy, and absolutely celebrated the moment I made it through three minutes.
The cryochamber stays at a temperature around -168 degrees. They take your skin temperature before you enter: mine was 86 degrees upon entry, 54 degrees upon exit. You are dressed in a towel or a robe, if you choose. You may enter without these things as well. However, you will be required (and will want and be glad) to wear their gloves, long socks and slippers while in the chamber. While I typically have a deep breathing strategy for my claustrophobia, breathing in temperatures that negative produces more of your breath in the chamber. It's difficult to see, and can be disorienting. I switched gears to 4-7-8 breathing (a breathing technique I use in situations that I might panic in...a natural tranquilizer for the body,) breathing in for 4 counts, holding for 7 beats, and breathing out slowly for 8 counts. The counting occupied my mind, as my requested music in the first round didn't allow me to think. The counting helped me. I believe most people will be appreciative that they can play anything you want inside the chamber to help pass the time.

What I noticed upon checking out is I could immediately walk, stand, and sit without as much pain. What I can say about the claims they make about the therapy is that everything was true for me. Having removed the acute pain, inflammation and stress of the injury, I was in a better mood all day. I slept better every night thereafter than I had in days since the fall, which has improved my energy levels ever since.
Not only is this technology that Restore offers important as we move forward in medicine, but Restore is making it affordable for all, with all therapies costing $50 for non-members and $32 for Members of the organization.
I can't say enough about what Restore did for me that day. We will continue to highlight what this amazing facility offers and encourage everyone to take advantage of this technology and become a member of Restore Hyper Wellness!

Coaches Corner: Community is the New Currency
| |
|
When asking into the emotions of my coaching clients, the one thing they all seem to WORRY about is their finances right now. They FEAR losing all they have worked hard for and VALUE. They are GRIEVING the loss of their own American dream as they watch the world get more expensive and less equitable every day.
In a world that has removed us from nature in a way that most of us must depend on the convenience we have been sold to believe is the best option, when it is merely the best way to keep us working within the systems they have provided us, what do we do when the convenience is no longer comfortable or sustainable? When our neighbors suffer in silence, can we overcome the division the world has encouraged and fomented long enough
Americans across the nation are waking up to the notion that the life they were told to pursue isn't resulting in the promised rewards. They are also realizing how inequitable the systems are that dictate the terms of participation and benefits. They see the bailouts of large corporations, while student loan interest rates have soared since the government decided to handle and outsource the processing to companies with portfolios handled by Blackrock and Vanguard. They now understand that there are only a select few that reap the rewards of a rigged game, while millions suffer to keep up lifestyles of people they will never meet in their own communities.to really see the people in front of us and care enough to help? Can we make the necessary adjustments to handle materialistic lack for the sake of tending to the spirits of those we love, those we are acquainted with, live next to, and interact with in our own communities?
Can we find it in our hearts to work together, help each other, and value our communities in the same way we value our own families? Can we value ourselves for the help we extend to others as much as we place value on the amount of money we make (or don't, these days, given our current affairs.)
| |
How do we turn the tide to create communities that care for each other, when very few of us really know each other anymore? It begins in the heart of every one of us. It begins when we learn to value ourselves AS WE ARE, and what we bring to the table when we engage with people from that heart-centered space. It begins when we move from COMMON courtesy and decency and contrived politeness, to genuine concern for the people around us. This takes less effort than people think.
It's hard enough right now just to take care of our families, but if we look away from the pain in our communities, we fail to see how much we all benefit when we collectively make sure we are all fed, housed, listened to, seen, and held as sacred reflections of Source Consciousness (God.) We all need each other. When we hold space for each other, we give more than we know.
Think about what you need as an individual to thrive, not just survive. Look within your own families to see if there are beliefs you have that are keeping you from your family members. Evaluate your community...is everyone okay? If not, are there ways to get involved that can help? Are the elderly, the children, the vulnerable accounted for within community policies or can changes be advocated for? Are our representatives doing the jobs they were elected to do? What can improve?
I live in a small beach community. What I noticed immediately is they stick together and they take care of each other. I could not have found a better place to be as a disabled person. I watch them handle their community without regulatory aid or beauocratic interest. They collect their own trash, check in with those who need them, make sure people are fed collectively from what they pull out of the sea or hunt or garden, they wave to each other and communicate with all they see. It is the best example I have of a fully sustainable community...and they do this for each other no matter when they move in. No gates, no exclusivity of any kind. Are there squabbles? Sure. But ultimately, they're committed to peaceful coexistence. If you need something, they have your back.
Life is hard enough. When we care for each other, we don't need government involvement. Find ways of exchange with each other. Money is not the only currency in the world. Moreover, money has become a locked gateway for many. Barter where you can, give freely to those in need. Community is the new currency.

Chakral Connections: The Solar Plexus Chakra & Our Relationship with Self & Others
The third chakra, the Solar Plexus chakra is between the naval and the bottom of the sternum. It governs the inner aspects of opinion and personal power (self) the emotional action of expansiveness (self and with others) and the spiritual action of growth. It governs the physical action of digestion and the physiological system of the metabolic/digestive system. As such, it is the chakra most affected by stress. Stress can shut down our digestive system and wreak havoc metabolically. When blocked or rotating in the wrong direction, we see dangerous physical conditions arrive, from diabetes to cancer, individually. Collectively, we see people unable to grow and expand together, as everyday stress keeps them locked inside their own bodies, unable to process enough to know what they need, digest their feelings, and stand in their own power to transmute feelings of victimhood, envy, and a lack of self-worth. Chronic pain and disease isolates us, depresses us, and leaves us feeling helpless to achieve personal growth. It's imperative that we examine the curriculum of this chakra to discover our true essence of who we are, how we process the world, and handle our relationships in the world.
On a physical internal level, at its simplest level, we need to look at how we digest our food. If things are not flowing smoothly, what changes can be made? Can we remove inflammatory foods to feel better? One way to make changes is to no longer evaluate our food based on calories in/calories out as that just relates to WORK. We also need to review how we digest the world and how it affects our relationships with ourselves and others.
Remember that digestion begins with the eyes as well. We digest everything we see...so monitoring that for toxic material is one of the most important things we can do to relieve digestive upset. When we focus on the negativity of the news and social media, we get lulled into believing everything is bad. This makes digestion on any level difficult. Moreover, constant ingestion of negativity creates a false sense that the world is all bad, all the time. This is simply not true and affects our mood.

At Divinitude, we have an entire page devoted to changing the way you look at food based on thermal nature (hot, cold, warm, cool, neutral,) flavor (sour, salty, sweet, pungent or bitter,) and embodied effects. We encourage everyone to see if this changes the way you process your food. For reference, there is a list of food properties to help.
On a body level, it's important to move in order to shift things internally. Twisting yoga poses drain the phlegm trapped in the channels that hold excess pain and unprocessed emotions. Yoga poses like cow pose, sitting spinal twists, and camel pose twist, stretch and open the middle of the body, easing flow and digestion.
On a mind and spirit level, aromatherapy is often used to ease stress, calm tension, and regulate emotions to help elevate our moods. Divinitude's Natalie Clark offers aromatherapy in all of her therapy sessions as an add-on service. For home use, the solar plexus is eased by clary sage, juniper and geranium essential oils.
On a soul level, coaching around the places we get stuck in life can help us see things from different perspectives, dig deeper into how we actually feel and act accordingly, rather than continuing to move through and engage in the world feeling as though we are incapable of making the changes necessary to be happy with ourselves and happy in our relationships with the world. When self care is not enough, know that the Divinitude Community is here to help! It is our goal and mission to help every client learn to love themselves fully, exactly as they are, so they can love within community too.
