Foothills Humane Society Welcomes New Staff

Columbus, N.C. - September 9, 2022 - Foothills Humane Society (FHS) in Columbus, N.C. is welcoming new teammates in all departments, including a fully-staffed kennel team.

Leading the team as interim executive director is Michelle Yelton, former director of marketing and communications and member of the leadership team at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort from 2017-2022. Yelton also owned and operated her own public relations, marketing and special events company in Rutherfordton, N.C. for 15 years.

Returning to the team as dog kennel manager is Kenny Lawrence, a respected leader in the shelter industry with a natural ability to manage both people and dogs. Serving as volunteer coordinator is Paula Drake, a familiar face to Foothills Humane Society as its former part-time volunteer and foster coordinator from 2009-2011. Filling the role of foster and marketing coordinator is Kiara O’Shields who comes to Foothills Humane Society following four years as general manager at Down to Earth Garden Center. Team veteran Monica Garren is still serving as adoption coordinator and brings a wealth of institutional knowledge to the new team from her six years with the shelter.

In addition to these team members, an additional seven employees have been hired to the team to fill open positions in kennels, administration, adoption and in-take.

Training is a core initiative of the Foothills Humane Society board and Yelton. Professional dog trainers Cherie Mascis and Kayla Parrish have already taught several training exercises including understanding dog behavior, how to properly use a lead line leash, dog-to-dog introductions, how to break up a dog fight, and other important safety education. The shelter has adjusted its hours to open at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays to allow time for weekly team training those mornings.

“The Foothills Humane Society board is committed to giving our staff, animals, customers, volunteers and fosters the support they need to have the best possible experience. We are excited about the direction in which Michelle and her leadership team are moving the shelter. Their focus on professionalism, teamwork and customer service will continue to elevate the level of care FHS provides our community,” said Tara Brannon, Foothills Humane Society Board President.
$10 Adoption Special
The shelter is over capacity with animals, and overcrowding has caused a state of emergency for most shelters across the country at this time. To facilitate adoptions at Foothills Humane Society, all adult dog, cat and kitten adoptions are reduced to $10 to approved adopters through September 15, 2022. All adoptable animals can be viewed online at foothillshumanesociety.org and the shelter is open Mondays and Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Volunteers and fosters are also always in demand and those opportunities can also be found on the website.

Foothills Humane Society is still in need of an additional vet technician and anyone interested should send a resume to director@foothillshumanesociety.org
