December 2025

Central Florida Chapter Update

Warm holiday greetings to all our Central Florida Chapter members. As we wrap up another busy season on the Florida Trail, I want to extend sincere appreciation for the steady commitment and enthusiasm you bring to our community.

Our chapter has made strong progress this fall. Much of our scheduled maintenance in the Central Region is now complete, and we’re already shifting our focus toward planning winter hikes, outreach opportunities, and early spring stewardship needs. This time of year always brings renewed energy to the trail, and it’s been wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces out exploring and volunteering.

We’re also continuing to streamline communication across Meetup, our chapter website, and email updates to make it easier for everyone to stay connected. Clear, consistent information is one of the best gifts we can give our members—and we’re grateful for your suggestions as we keep refining these systems.

Thank you for the kindness, time, and support you’ve shown throughout the year. Every contribution, large or small, helps carry this chapter forward.

Chelsey Stevens

The holiday season is the perfect moment to celebrate the people who brighten our trail community all year long. Volunteer Award nominations are now open, and we warmly encourage you to recognize someone who has made a meaningful impact on the Florida Trail.

Across our chapter, volunteers give in so many ways—maintaining corridor, leading hikes, greeting newcomers, sharing their expertise, or quietly supporting behind the scenes. No task is too small to make a difference, and many of our volunteers give generously without expecting recognition.

If someone has inspired you this year, please consider submitting a nomination. It’s a heartfelt way to say thank you and shine a light on the individuals who help keep our chapter vibrant and welcoming.

To each and every volunteer: your efforts are deeply appreciated. Thank you for bringing your spirit, your service, and your joy to the Florida Trail community this holiday season and throughout the year.

Highlighted Hike of the Month

Savage Christmas Creek Preserve

This month we return to one of Orange County’s hidden gems, Savage Christmas Creek Preserve. This property’s holiday moniker comes from the headwaters of a creek which takes its name from nearby town and a fort built in the Second Seminole War. Located in a rural northeastern corner of the county, the preserve showcases a fantastic variety of natural habitats along its trail network, ranging from wet and scrubby flatwoods to sandhills, shady oak hammocks and cypress swamps.

Recent additions to an already impressive trail system include interpretative signage on the white loop, nicknamed the Historical Trail, and a light blue spur that adds a 1.3 mile round trip through soggy and xeric habitats on the eastern side. A portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail runs through this parcel, although it is disconnected from the main trail, being part of a future reroute. FTA volunteers completed maintenance along this stretch on December 9th, so the paths are freshly cut!

Our accompanying guided hike this month is deemed The Night Hike Before Christmas, taking place after hours at Savage Christmas Creek Preserve. Our chapter has special permission to access the property at night for the event, as the preserve is officially open from sunrise to sundown, and the parking area gate is locked at dusk. For nearby night hiking fully accessible at any time, check out Seminole Ranch and Econ Sandhills Conservation Areas.

Barr Hammock near Gainesville Abounds with Family-Friendly Trails Through Old Growth Forest

By Rob Rogers

Any of you who have visited the University of Florida are probably familiar with the trails at Payne’s Prairie Preserve State Park. But another collection of trails through a beautiful forest of tall live oaks and longleaf pines can be found not far south of Gainesville, and it’s free and easier to reach from I-75. Barr Hammock Preserve is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a quiet place to hike or bike while visiting Gainesville.

Barr Hammock Preserve sits on 12,000 acres of forested land previously used for cattle grazing south of Payne’s Prairie and just west of Micanopy. Acquired by Alachua County using Alachua County Forever land conservation funds, Barr Hammock is split into two sections with separate trail heads—a more open prairie section to the north with a single 6.8-mile loop, and a more forested southern section with four connected multi-use loop trails ranging in length from 3 to 9 miles. As Alachua County’s largest county-owned wilderness preserve, Barr Hammock provides a key wildlife corridor connecting Payne’s Prairie to the Ocala National Forest.

I recently stopped by Barr Hammock’s southern section and hiked the orange-blazed 8-mile Hammock Loop Trail. With most of its length shared with horseback riders, these trails are ideal for families, as they combine easily navigated signage and blazes with sturdy hiking surfaces that are well-shaded. Although the Preserve contains precious few hiking-only trails, the forest roads on which most trail sections lie are either grassy or reinforced in lower areas with limestone, so you mostly avoid that soft sand that can wear down your legs and ankles.

The trails in the southern section meander through beautiful forests in varying ecosystems with large old growth trees. The sections nearer the trailhead wind primarily through pine forest. Then deeper into the Hammock Loop, the live oaks take over, with many huge old growth live oaks arching over the trail.

A particular treat and a great place to rest for a snack is the scenic overlook of Ledwith Lake about 3 ½ miles from the trailhead and parking area. This huge open space is presided over by a giant live oak and has a covered picnic table near the lakeside. The views here across Ledwith Lake and Prairie are vast and natural.

Sections of the trail in lower lying areas can be flooded during wetter months, when mosquitoes may require insect repellent. I did also find several short sugar sand trail sections that were heavily rooted by hogs and took some huffing to get through. Alligators are also common in the more open prairie portions of Barr Hammock’s northern section. But for a taste of easily navigated old Florida forest, Barr Hammock Preserve is worth checking out if you have a few hours while visiting Gainesville.

Thanksgiving Campout at Blue Springs State Park

By Bill Turman

We had another Great Thanksgiving Campout, this year at Blue Springs State Park. We had a great group for the Thanksgiving Dinner, as well as left-overs on Friday, which included delicious food and fellowship. We had hikes, a kayak trip around Hontoon Island, as well as a Cycle trip on the adjacent bike path. The weather and temperature cooperated for a great weekend.  Thanks to those who led and planned the weekend, including Mary Slater Linn, Diane Dammiller and Sue Carroll.  A GREAT WEEKEND, OUTSTANDING FOOD, AND EXCELLENT COMPANY!

Next year, Manatee Springs State Park.

FTA Kayak Trip, Hontoon Island

By Bill Turman

On November 28, 2025, five adventurous paddlers met at the French Avenue Boat Ramp. The temperature was in the low 40’s and a brisk wind when we started, although the day turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.  We then proceeded on a counterclockwise round trip around Hontoon Island. The paddle began traveling north on the St. Johns River to Lake Beresford, by Hontoon Island State Park and the Hontoon Ferry landing.

We then turned south down the Hontoon Dead River. When we reached the entrance to Snake Creek, we gambled and headed down the creek. In the past it has been totally overgrown with vegetation, but this time we were able to complete its length, with only a quarter mile section of vegetation where we had to claw and fight our way through. After Snake Creek we returned to the St. Johns River, and then arrived at Blue Springs State Park.

Although we were not able to paddle up the spring run, we did spot a couple manatees.  We then returned to our launch point for a total trip of about 10 miles total.  The day and weather ended up being outstanding, a great day and excellent company!

Backpacking Trip - Withlacoochee State Forest, Croom Tract

When: December 13th, 9:00 AM

Activity Leader: Bill Turman (Cell) 407-413-2950

(email) HokieBill@bellsouth.net

Are you a backpacker who would like to gain a little experience, hopefully see some wildlife, see a new location, as well as have some fun? Come join us for a weekend backpacking trip in the Withlacoochee State Forest, Croom Tract. This was one of the locations where I did some of my first hiking and backpacking after moving to Florida in the early 1990’s. Croom is unique in that it contains loop trails allowing for weekend trips starting and ending at the same location. It is also a very scenic section with topography including hills (elevation changes) and old mines. Also, there is a water source along the trail near the campsite, so you do not need to cache water prior to the trip or carry a significant amount of water.

We will meet on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM at either the Silver Lake Recreation Area pavilion and TH parking area (There is a question concerning the trail under the I-75 bridge being closed.) On Saturday, we will backpack the High Water Trail, Silver Lake Connector, B Loop north and the A Loop to the west campsite near Tucker Hill Fire Tower (water is available), a total of 8 to 9 miles, where we will set up camp and spend the night. On Sunday, we will backpack the B Loop, B-C Loop, B Loop, Silver Lake Connector, and the High Water Trail, returning to the trailhead, a total of 6 to 7 miles.

Upcoming Trail Maintenance

Our Chapter's Trail Maintenance is almost wrapped up for this year! We have a work hike at Seminole Ranch on December 17th, and then Charles Bronson State Forest on January 13th. Stay tuned for details about a bridge build in January as well.

Our 2025-2026 Trail Maintenance Schedule

Video Highlight!

By Drew Cohen, Happy Hoofers Chapter

This video covers a hike of the newly rerouted Florida Trail in Big Cypress. I made this hike a loop by hiking the Florida Trail until it rejoins Noble Grade or the new white trail south back to the parking lot. This loop was previously listed on some sites as the Blue Orange trail so I am calling this route the Orange White Trail. I show many of the new signage along the route as well as the campsites in big cypress along the route. I hope that you enjoy the video.

📬 Note on Newsletter Distribution

We’re excited to share that our chapter membership is growing — and that’s a great thing! To ensure we’re able to continue sharing updates with our active members, we regularly remove addresses from our email list who are not current members of the Florida Trail Association.

Due to the limitations of our current email platform, we’re capped at 500 subscribers. As much as we’d love to send the newsletter to everyone, the cost and platform restrictions make it unsustainable.

If your membership has lapsed, this newsletter may no longer arrive in your inbox — but you can still access it anytime on our website and social media pages.

Want to keep receiving updates by email? Simply renew your membership and we’ll gladly add you back to the list!
