THE FOOTPATH NEWSLETTER

The Florida Trail Association develops, maintains, protects, and promotes a network of hiking trails throughout the state, including the unique Florida National Scenic Trail.

Together with our partners we provide opportunities for the public to hike, engage in outdoor recreation, participate in environmental education, and contribute to meaningful volunteer work.

September 2023

The first day of fall on September 23rd is fast approaching, and most folks are probably looking for a respite from the hot and dry conditions this summer has brought. In addition to being the fall equinox, the 23rd also happens to be our first trail maintenance work party for the 2023-2024 season!

We are over halfway through hurricane season, and Central Florida seems to have had minimal impact from Hurricane Idalia. After a duo of strong storms last year, our dedicated volunteer maintenance crew removed hundreds of trees from the trails in our area. Many of the state parks, forests, and natural lands close before severe tropical weather moves through, reopening once rangers have had a chance to assess trail conditions. After a storm passes, it is best to check first online or by phone before heading out and finding that the trailhead may be inaccessible.

Although the weather tends to be warm and the trails soggy, autumn is one of the best times of year to spot wildflowers in Central Florida. Coral-red colored pine lilies are one of the most striking flowers, occurring between August and October in pine flatwoods habitats. Florida paintbrush, chaffheads, and blazing stars sport vibrant purple blooms in the fall, and goldenrod tends to blossom around the same time, topped with bright yellow bouquets.

We have a few activities lined up for the month of September, and our monthly meeting is scheduled at Leu Gardens on the 21st. Check out our Meetup page to stay up to date with the latest events. Chuluota Wilderness Area is the Highlighted Hike of the Month, and a group hike of this preserve will take place on September 2nd.

Happy Hiking!

Getting Down to Business

The Chapter Needs Activity Leaders!

Over the years, our chapter has thrived, bringing together like-minded individuals who shared a passion for outdoor adventures and social gatherings. Our Activity Leaders have played a pivotal role in organizing diverse and exciting outings, from backpacking and hiking to paddling and cycling, creating a vibrant community that attracted more members with each passing year. However, recent times have seen a decline in both the number of Activity Leaders and the frequency of activities, leading to a decrease in our chapter membership. To reignite our success and growth, we must focus on revitalizing our activities by encouraging current leaders and actively seeking out new ones.

Highlighted Hike of the Month: Chuluota Wilderness Area

Welcome to the first Highlighted Hike of the Month! We will have a hike featured each month in our Central Florida Chapter newsletter and website, and will be leading a hike there on the first Saturday of each month. The September hike is the Florida Trail in Chuluota Wilderness Area. This will be an out-and-back hike of approximately 5 miles total. Great for beginner hikers! This is one of our driest trails, but there may be a few wet/muddy areas if we get storms in the days before the hike.

Episode 88: Closing the Gaps on the Florida Trail | Royce Gibson, FTA Executive Director

Episode 88’s guest is Florida Trail Association Executive Director, Royce Gibson. It’s been a while since I’ve had a representative from the FTA on the podcast and when I saw the latest campaign from the FTA, the Close the Gaps campaign, I knew I needed to get someone on to speak directly to this. Royce was the natural fit and it was great to sit down and hear what the current plans are for closing the approximate 300 miles of gaps in the Florida Trail. Road walks are the number one complaint about the Florida Trail, probably followed closely by loose dogs, and there’s no shortage of people looking for answers on how to close these gaps. Since it had also been quite a while since the FTA has had an Executive Director, this was a wonderful opportunity to get some insight into how the organization is run. If you aren’t a member of the Florida Trail Association, consider becoming a member and supporting the work to keep the trail maintained and accessible to hikers!
