The first day of fall on September 23rd is fast approaching, and most folks are probably looking for a respite from the hot and dry conditions this summer has brought. In addition to being the fall equinox, the 23rd also happens to be our first trail maintenance work party for the 2023-2024 season!
We are over halfway through hurricane season, and Central Florida seems to have had minimal impact from Hurricane Idalia. After a duo of strong storms last year, our dedicated volunteer maintenance crew removed hundreds of trees from the trails in our area. Many of the state parks, forests, and natural lands close before severe tropical weather moves through, reopening once rangers have had a chance to assess trail conditions. After a storm passes, it is best to check first online or by phone before heading out and finding that the trailhead may be inaccessible.
Although the weather tends to be warm and the trails soggy, autumn is one of the best times of year to spot wildflowers in Central Florida. Coral-red colored pine lilies are one of the most striking flowers, occurring between August and October in pine flatwoods habitats. Florida paintbrush, chaffheads, and blazing stars sport vibrant purple blooms in the fall, and goldenrod tends to blossom around the same time, topped with bright yellow bouquets.
We have a few activities lined up for the month of September, and our monthly meeting is scheduled at Leu Gardens on the 21st. Check out our Meetup page to stay up to date with the latest events. Chuluota Wilderness Area is the Highlighted Hike of the Month, and a group hike of this preserve will take place on September 2nd.
Happy Hiking!
