Physical Assessment Training in a First at NYCPM

A first for NYCPM occurred on March 10th, when “Cultural Diversity and Racial Bias in the Medical Sector” was presented virtually to its second-year class; this was the first time that cultural competence – the ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures – was integrated into their Physical Assessment Course, abbreviated as PASS.
Presented by Sandie Luna and moderated and produced by Lily Burd-Orama, Managing Director of C3NY, a New York City-based company that trains and supplies standardized patients (SP) to medical schools, the program included many relevant graphics as well as several SP scenarios depicting interactions between patients and medical personnel (all actors). Keith Crenshaw Wins PICA Award
Keith Crenshaw (2022) has received the PICA Distinguished Scholar Award, given by the APMA Educational Foundation to nine students, one from each college of podiatric medicine. The nine were selected from among the 200 2020-2021 APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship recipients, and were chosen based on academic excellence, ability to manage COVID-19 situations, and vision for future of the profession, among other criteria. Awardees each receive a $5,000 award.

Russo Wins New ABPM Award
Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM announced in March that Ashley Russo (2021) is the winner of the new Stephen M. Geller Graduate Merit Award / American Board of Podiatric Medicine Graduate Merit Award, given to a fourth-year student for academic excellence in podiatric medicine and orthopedics as well as outstanding professional conduct. She will receive a $2,000 award and plaque at graduation in May.

Monica Kelley Places Second in Writing Contest
Monica Kelley (2022) won second place in the 35th Annual American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) Student Writing Competition for her paper titled "Counting Grades and Counting Calories: The Prevalence of Eating Disorders in Medical Students." She will receive an honorarium of $750. Source: PM News

ACFAS Club President Honored
Justin Erfanian-Taheri (2022) is being honored as president of the ACFAS Club, by ACFAS, which recognizes its student club presidents for the work they do throughout the school year on behalf of the organization. He will receive a scholarship that will help defray his costs for attending the organization’s annual meeting in May in Las Vegas. Source: PM News

Two Students are Finalists for New Scholarship
Nayan Khan (2023) and Treloara Harrisson (2024), were finalists in the new “PrePodiatryLife Women’s Month Scholarship,” initiated in 2021 by a female podiatrist. It was created to inspire and recognize women podiatry medical students for their community service, health, and contribution at a national level. Source: PM News

Patrick Gannon, PhD
Professor, Pre-Clinical Sciences
Dr. Patrick Gannon, who joined NYCPM in October 2020, is the Director for both the General and Lower Extremity Anatomy courses.
The trajectory of his education suggests a wide-ranging curiosity: BS in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Central London in 1978; following the move from his origin in Yorkshire, England to New York City, an MS in General Anthropology from CUNY Hunter College in 1990; and a PhD in Physical Anthropology from CUNY Graduate Center in 1995.
Dr. Gannon has held a variety of academic positions at both medical and scientific institutions. He has taught undergraduate human gross anatomy, and post-graduate courses in head and neck surgical anatomy. In tandem he conducted translational clinical research studies for 25 years ... Read more

Dr. Markinson Receives PM Lifetime
Achievement Award
Bryan C. Markinson, DPM (’81), received the highest number of votes cast by podiatrists nationwide and so will be inducted into the PM (Podiatry Management) Hall of Fame, and be honored with the 36th Annual PM Lifetime Achievement Award, the magazine announced in March. The award will be presented at the PM Hall of Fame luncheon held during the APMA national meeting in Denver, CO on July 31st.
Dr. Markinson received his BS cum laude from LIU in 1977, graduated from NYCPM cum laude in 1981, completed his residency and fellowship, and then joined the faculty at NYCPM, remaining there until 1995. ... Read more

ACFAS Award to Dr. Eric G. Walter
Eric G. Walter, DPM (’90), has received the 2021 American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ (ACFAS) Distinguished Service Award, one of the College’s highest honors; Dr. Walter is the award’s 18th recipient. Former Trustee Webb Passes Away
Eugene H. Webb, former Trustee of NYCPM and FCNY, has died at age 102. He served on the NYCPM/FCNY Boards in 1995-1997; 1999-2005 and 2006-2014, was Treasurer in 2009, and received the honorary degree of LHD (Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa), in 2001. He contributed to the Students Scholarship Fund and raised money for both student scholarships and the Foot Center of New York.
Mr. Webb was considered a real estate pioneer according to Harlem Community News; in 1968 he and his partner managed 6,000 housing units in Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, including 4,000 subsidized apartments, and was part of the development team behind Renaissance Plaza in Central Harlem. He also helped found Freedom National Bank (now closed) and Carver Federal Savings Bank, which remains one of the largest Black-owned banks in the US.

Silverio Receives Additional Degree
As Alain O. Silverio, EdM, Assistant Dean of Academic Administration and Outcomes, continues to work towards his doctorate in Higher Education and Leadership, his university, St. Peters University in Jersey City, NJ, will award him an additional degree. He will receive an EdS, or Education Specialist degree, conferred to those who complete the coursework needed for the EdD degree. He will receive his degree in May.

Queens, Nassau Divisions of NYSPMA Offer New Scholarships
The NYSPMA Queens Division, led by Arthur Gudeon, DPM (’60), is sponsoring a new scholarship for NYCPM students. The Queens Division will award a scholarship to the junior student group that receives first place for their poster presentation at The Class of 2022 Research Poster Day, which will be held on Monday, May 24, 2021. D. Scott Malay, DPM, editor of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, will serve as the judge. The Queens Division already sponsors an award for a senior who stays in New York City or Queens to train.
The Nassau County Division of NYSPMA has created two new scholarships in honor of the late Alvin J. Kanegis, DPM (’56). The two scholarships, worth $500 each, will be awarded to students who are natives or currently live on Long Island; one scholarship will go to a student who can demonstrate active volunteerism for their house of worship. The second scholarship will go to a student who has overcome an obstacle over the past 3-4 years and has had continued success in school.

Library Receives Multiple Grants
Paul Tremblay, Chief Medical Librarian, has announced that the Library has just received two Collection Development checks totaling $6,079 from New York State, which will be spent on either physical or electronic material. In addition, the Library has received a Technology Grant, which will be put towards the purchase of two iPad kiosks in the Clinic, extending library service to FCNY.

Alumni Obituary
Carl Harris, DPM (’75), who recently passed away, was remembered by Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM, as a beloved faculty member in the Department of Medicine for many years, where he was a gentle, soft spoken and kind professor who mentored many students and cared for FCNY patients in a competent and compassionate manner. The funeral was in mid-May.

Alumni Obituary
Philip A. Giammarino, DPM (’78) of Oceanside, New York, died earlier this year in Boca Raton, Florida. After Dr. Giammarino graduated from NYCPM in 1978, he completed a podiatric residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital and was affiliated with New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
