VMC and VMK - January 2025

Chris Atkinson, pastor at Pinewoods Bible Chapel (Angus, ON) and VMC's Liaison with our sister organization Vision Ministries Kenya (VMK), along with Matt Craig, pastor at Don Valley Bible Chapel (Toronto, ON), travelled together to Kenya this past fall to visit and encourage the pastors and churches of VMK.

Read on to learn more about their experience in Kenya.

Mutual Encouragement & Sharpening

As often happens, the trip to Kenya in October 2024 was encouraging, humbling, and challenging to Matt Craig.

The eagerness to learn and grow as pastoral leaders was evident as VMK pastors gathered together for training and discipleship. Because VMC has established relationships and gained trust with Kenyan pastors and congregations, people came because they saw the value in what was being offered. Being away from work and family for a week was a sacrifice for many VMK pastors, and yet they realized that it was a week well spent - for the kingdom of God, their congregations, and their own spiritual growth.

Matt was also humbled by the dedication and sacrifical love that the VMK pastors demonstrated. They were often doing a number of things to sustain their ministries. Being a pastor in Kenya often means holding another job to pay the bills. Especially for the pastors in more rural contexts. He said being a pastor almost feels like taking a vow of poverty for some of these pastors. Yet - their enthusiasiam and sense of urgency for sharing the gospel compels them to figure out a way to make it work.

And Matt was challenged by his Kenyan brothers and sisters. He wondered - here in Canada, do we sometimes shy away from sharing the gospel? Do we step back when maybe we ought to step in? Should we allow ourselves to be stretched outside our comfort zones - for the sake of the gospel?

The encouragement and sharpening one another was mutual. The affection and love between VMC and VMK continues to grow and there’s a real sense of the unity of the body of Christ. It’s bigger than our own thing and we’re actually participating in something that is outside our control and is fueled by something that is not us.

This is the kingdom of God and this is the Spirit of God at work

Apples of Gold: The Perfect Words at the Right Time

Remember that verse in Proverbs 25 about apples of gold in settings of silver? This is how the writer of Proverbs describes a word fitly spoken. It’s about the perfect words spoken at just the right time - it’s something beautiful. Something remarkable.

When Chris Atkinson, and others like Matt Craig, Doug Loveday, and Gord Martin were planning the teaching content for the VMK trip this past fall, they decided to focus on maturing in leadership. Two years ago, the teaching was about being a pastor and a pastor’s personal faith in God. Last year, they taught about relationships - with each other, their marriages, and among the congregation. And so this year - it seemed right to focus on leadership structures and governance. They wondered if this information was appropriate or if it would be too much. They knew it wasn’t the most exciting topic but still - necessary information.

So Chris, Matt, Doug, and Gord dug into leadership structures and governance and designed teaching booklets for the trip to Kenya this past fall. They were diligent and enthusiastic in their writing - this wasn’t just an introduction, it was detailed and thorough.

And guess what?

When they arrived in Kenya, they found out that new rules are before the Kenyan government waiting to be implemented that would make it mandatory for all churches in Kenya to be proper institutions with governance structures, job descriptions, their own bank accounts and so on - or the churches will be closed.

The need of the VMK churches and the teaching from VMC - well, it was like apples of gold in settings of silver. It was exactly right. It was perfectly ideal teaching content for what was needed by the VMK churches at this particular time.

Evangelistic Zeal: Encouragement from VMK Leaders

That’s what caught Chris Atkinson's attention when he was in Kenya this past fall.

He met Joshua.

A 50 year old pastor, married with children.

Josh is a walking miracle.

He was diagnosed with AIDS years ago and was miraculously healed.

Today he is a healthy man with a healthy wife and healthy children.

And Joshua wants people to know Jesus.

He is passionate about evangelism.

He’s planted 16 or 17 churches, the largest one being about 500 people.

Here is a man who knows the transforming power of the gospel and he wants other people to know it as well.

It was such an encouragement to Chris - to spend time with someone with such zeal for evangelism. There was an enthusiastic urgency that Joshua embodied and those around him couldn’t walk away unaffected. It was the peace and joy of Christ made evident - as someone who has come face to face with Jesus.

Joshua needed help with organizational and discipleship structures. He needed connection with other pastors. So Chris was happy to introduce him to the VMK family of churches and to get some things in place for him. As more people come to Christ, it’s good to know that there are churches ready to welcome them. A great way that VMC and VMK continue to work together for the kingdom of God.

A Call from Out of the Blue:

Matt Craig

Kenya was always in the back of Matt Craig’s mind.

As someone who had been to Kenya before multiple times, he knew the need there.

He knew there wasn’t alot of access to good leadership resources and the Kenyan church tugged at his heart a bit.

But, in his mind, when he visited Kenya in 2017 - that was his last trip.

Roll around to 2024.

Christians from Kenya had been asking him to come back again so he had been praying about it for almost a year.

He was open to it - but just how would this be possible?

Imagine his surprise when he attended Thinking Shrewdly 2024 in Waterloo, ON and Chris Atkinson walked up to him and said - seemingly, out of the blue -

“Hey, do you want to go to Kenya?”

It didn’t take him long to say yes.

Yes, because he already understood the need that Kenyan pastors face.

Yes, because God had already given him a special affection for the Kenyan church.

Yes, because he knew that VMC had a well regarded track record with the VMK churches and he could readily be a part of it.

And yes - because God seemed to be orchestrating something and he didn’t want to miss out on what the Spirit might be doing.

The Joy of Working Together:

Chris Atkinson

One of the best parts of the trip was the great way they worked together.

It seemed like such a gift that God had orchestrated these two men to work together and to use their complimentary gifts for the good of the kingdom of God.

Chris Atkinson describes Matt Craig as a strong Bible teacher with a pastoral gifting while he is more of a preacher. Matt has pastoral gifts which “calms the feathers” while Chris knows how to ask questions and encourage critical thinking - which sometimes “ruffles the feathers.” Matt is detailed while Chris is more of a big picture thinker.

Chris and Matt were clear on the purpose of their trip and their shared goal of assisting VMK - so they allowed each other to shine. They gave permission to each other to interrupt each other’s teachings. If someone was stuck, the other one would jump in and offer further explanation. Chris was great at thinking of useful illustrations while Matt was good at digging deep into biblical texts.

And the icing on top? They are both introverts. So at the end of the day, they were happy with silence. And both could understand the joy in that. :)

God was present in the joy of working well with a brother in Christ and the joy of shared purpose and complimentary gifting.

This is the goodness of God.

Women in the Canadian Evangelical Church

We want to tell you about something new!

Vision Ministries Canada and some partnering organizations are involved in an incredible new research project. This study is called Women in the Canadian Evangelical Church. We are actively investigating how Canadian women understand their role and participate in the local church.

Robust research on women in the church could help us gain insight into trends in women's participation and their future in the church as well as identify obstacles and opportunities for women's involvement in the church.

We want to hear from you!

This project is a big undertaking and requires feedback, surveys, and interviews of various kinds. Please share with your church.
