Small Signs of Spiritual Life - September 2024

A Boy Who Can't Sleep

Ming-Peng Gong, VMC Pastor & Director of Chinese Church Association

Toronto, ON

Ming-Peng Gong, VMC pastor and Director of Chinese Church Association, travelled to Asia this past summer and came back with this encouraging testimony from a sister there:

"My son has had trouble sleeping since he was born in 2016. Compared to his peers, he is seriously sleep deprived and often wakes up and cries after 12 o'clock midnight. Since my son was born, I have never slept a full night. I never had a peaceful noontime nap. In kindergarten for three years, the teacher said every day that he didn't take a noon nap and disturbed others. No matter how I comfort him, it doesn't work. I am really helpless. My prayers are useless.

He himself was also very miserable. He said he didn't believe in the Lord anymore, and it was useless to believe. He didn't want to pray anymore.

Thank the Lord! This brother who came from Canada returned to pastor young people this year. I have heard about the healings that have happened in his meetings, so I brought my son to the meeting with a try-and-see mentality. During the first day of meeting with the brother, my son still insisted on not believing in the Lord, so the only thing the brother could do was to pray for committing my son to the Lord and blessing from the Lord on him.

That night, 11 people slept in the same room. That night, there were snoring sounds, that night, there were loud shouting sounds from nightmares, that night, there were sisters talking…

but my son slept peacefully. He woke up at about 3 a.m. and asked me: Mom, when did I fall asleep? I said: You fell asleep as soon as you lay down last night. He immediately knelt there and prayed a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord.

The next morning, my son went to the brother to be prayed over and accept the Lord as his Savior. He asked the Lord to heal him so that he could sleep, and asked the brother to anoint him with oil.

During the noontime nap, my son fell asleep for the first time since he was born in 2016. I watched him with my eyes full of grateful tears.

Thanks be to the Lord, thanks be to the Lord! "

Listen to Your Life

In a few words the essence of everything I was trying to say both as a novelist and as a preacher, it would be something like this: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is … life itself is grace.

- Frederick Buechner, Now and Then

“Listen to your life.

That’s what God is saying to me lately.”

Recently a pastor told me the story of how God brought back to mind a Bible study he did 10 years ago.

Back in college, as part of an Intervarsity Bible study, he did a manuscript style study of the book of Mark.

He went through the whole gospel - reading and studying every line of the text.

Making notes.

Discussing each story - sentence by sentence.

Who could have guessed that 10 years later this chemistry major would be a youth pastor?

And that a high school student would be asking him to help her and her friends study Scripture?

That the studying and learning he did a decade ago would be just the thing he needed for this moment.

He said it was a reminder from God to take his own life seriously.

That his own experience can be used for the benefit of others.

That listening to your life is a spiritual discipline.

Because who knows how God will weave all these things together for God’s glorious mission?

A Special Fondness for Canada

Peter & Deborah Johnson - Evangelical Church Winning All

Mississauga, ON

Over a hundred years ago, two Canadians and an American sailed from Lake Ontario.

Destination? Northern Nigeria (known as the Sudan then).

Dream? That others would know and love Christ as Lord.

If only they could have seen into the future …

Now, more than a hundred years later, Peter and Deborah Johnson have come to Canada to share the good news of Jesus with Canadians.

They live on the shores of the same lake - Lake Ontario.

During the pandemic, they preached, offered Bible study, and prayer online.

People began to listen and look forward to these services.

A sort of church began to form via Zoom.

After the pandemic, people wanted to meet face to face so they planned a church retreat to bring everyone together.

This past June, they met again at a retreat centre for the third year in a row.

Peter and Deborah want to befriend people and encourage newcomers that God has brought them here for a reason.

They want people to have a better understanding of Jesus, to tell others their story of God’s faithfulness, and then to see what God will do with it.

This special fondness for Canada that these Nigerians have?

This is the grace of God.

Please Pray: VMK Trip

Please pray for our VMK Liaison Chris Atkinson and Pastor Matt Craig (Don Valley Bible Chapel) as they head to Kenya in just a few days to visit, encourage, and train our brothers and sisters in Kenya. See Chris' note below:

“Matt Craig and I, both pastors in VMC, are heading off to Kenya to help equip pastors.

We will be teaching in a conference held by Vision Ministries Kenya (VMK) which is strongly connected to VMC. We will arrive on Oct 11 in Kenya, preaching in local churches on the weekends and teach during the conference which runs Oct 14-18. Then we will be heading to Mombasa from Oct 21-23 for some day seminars to help equip pastors that VMK is connected with. Matt will be spending some time with pastors that he has a relationship with in Western Kenya too from Oct 23-26.

Please pray for safe travels and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit as we teach. Pray for a great impact among our brothers and sisters in Kenya!”

Looking to make a Gospel impact around the world?

Tearfund Sunday provides you with an opportunity to do just that. It provides your church with the opportunity to join with other churches across Canada who have boldly stood up to release families out of poverty and declare that Christ has come to bring life to the full.

Vision Ministries Canada is excited to partner with Tearfund Canada on Tearfund Sunday this year! Held on October 20th (or a day that works best for you), Tearfund Sunday is an invitation for your church family to deepen their understanding of God’s heart for the poor and provides an opportunity for your church to help families out of poverty in all its forms.

This year, there are two exciting themes to choose from. The theme Alive highlights the church’s role in transforming communities, while Streams of Living Water unpacks the effects a changing climate is having on the poor and what a Christian response looks like. Both options revolve around John 4 and the story of Jesus and the woman at the well.

Every Tearfund Sunday kit includes everything you need for a Sunday of inspiration and impact, including sermon notes, video, presentation, learning and promotional materials and more.
