From Aquaculture to Web and Mobile Development: Quincy College unveils six new program offerings for Fall 2016 to support South Shore workforce development

In direct response to industry need and student demand, during the 2016 academic year, Quincy College has developed
six
new program offerings for this fall, including short-term certificate
programs in aquaculture, web and mobile development, customer service, and entrepreneurship as well as a non-credit certificate
in event planning and a for-credit pre-nursing track aimed at students wanting to enter the popular nursing program at Quincy College
. 2016 marks one of the most active years for adding new courses and new programs to the Quincy College curriculum serving both the Quincy and Plymouth campuses.
Aundrea Kelley, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Quincy College reflected on the new academic programs and courses: "Our new programs and courses demonstrate Quincy College's dedication to delivering the best education we can to our students and the South Shore community. Faculty and deans propose n
ew programs and new courses to
the College's
Curriculum and Development Review
Committee
. Once approved through this
Committee
, proposal
s
are sent to the College
Senate for further review and approval. Next the proposals are reviewed by the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President. Following their approvals, the President submits new programs to the
Board of Governors for
final
review. Upon approval by the Board of Governors the new programs
are submitted to NEASC for inclusion in the College's institutional accreditation as well as to USED for financial aid purposes.
New
programs and courses are created
with student feedback in mind and
in consultation with department advisory boards consisting of leading industry members and community representatives from applicable fields
.
The new Quincy College Aquaculture program, offered on the Quincy College Plymouth Campus only, is the first of its kind program in Massachusetts for students to earn college credit and professional certification in aquaculture simultaneously. This program creates a pathway for graduates to earn an Associates Degree and enter the aquaculture industry fully certified
and with experience gained through placements with one of the program's industry partners.
Recognizing the growing demand for effective global customer service skills, the new Quincy College Customer Service Certificate program will prepare students for a career as a customer service professional. This certificate program helps students become skilled in multiple areas of customer service including customer communication, sales, intercultural communication, and organizational effectiveness.
The new Entrepreneurship Certificate is designed for the student who seeks to be an entrepreneur in a start-up business or who wants to work as an entrepreneurial change agent within an existing corporate setting. This program prepares students to recognize opportunities, identify business issues, and analyze actions to better position their business.
The demand for web and mobile development couldn't be more apparent with mobile users reaching a projected all-time high of 4.77 Billion mobile users. From developing mobile friendly websites to programming, the new Quincy College Web and Mobile Development Certificate program is designed for students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of web and mobile development or for those who wish to further enhance their web development careers.
The Pre-Nursing Track is one of the newest editions to the Quincy College course catalog
.
The pre-nursing track is designed as the first step towards a degree in nursing and provides a well-defined path that you can follow to complete
n
ursing
program
pre-requisites. Upon completion of the required courses, students may
choose to
apply directly for transfer to the Nursing degree program at Quincy College
or to continue to earn a degree in natural science
.
Students can complete the nursing program
at the Quincy and the Plymouth campuses
on either a full-time or part-time basis
.
The Quincy College
non-credit
Certificate in Event Planning, provides foundation
a
l education in event planning and management. Each course is professor-led
and the curriculum includes
the process of planning, marketing, implementing and evaluating the outcome of all types of events within the industry-social (weddings), corporate, nonprofit, educational and special events.
Quincy College
also offers courses
in both traditional 15-week and intensive abbreviated FLEX semester formats as well as during days, evenings, and weekends. These options help expand access and opportunity for
all students, from
recent
high school graduate
s
to
out-of-work or career-changing
adult
s
seeking
a new skill set
or
the foundation needed for
baccalaureate
degrees.
