Donovan Rypkema to Present Analysis of San Diego’s Historic Neighborhoods for National Preservation Month
SAN DIEGO, CA - April 28, 2026 - As part of National Preservation Month, nationally recognized preservation economist Donovan Rypkema will present the findings of The Urban Vitality Blueprint: A Data-Driven Analysis of Equity, Affordability, and Vitality in San Diego’s Historic Districts, a new independent economic report commissioned by SOHO and the preservation community examining the relationship between historic preservation, housing production, affordability, and sustainability in San Diego.
The media is invited to attend.
The free virtual presentation will take place on Saturday, May 9 at 1pm and will explore the findings of an independent study prepared by PlaceEconomics, a Washington, D.C.–based firm widely recognized for its research on the economic impacts of historic preservation.
The study examines development patterns, housing production, and affordability across San Diego neighborhoods and finds that historic areas are often denser, more affordable, and growing faster than commonly assumed.
During the presentation, Rypkema will discuss the data behind the report’s findings and explore how historic neighborhoods contribute to housing supply, economic vitality, and sustainable urban growth.
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion about the study and its implications for San Diego’s housing policies and neighborhood planning.
National Preservation Month is an ideal time to explore how historic neighborhoods contribute to the future of our cities,” said Alana Coons, SOHO communications director. “This research provides valuable insight into the role our historic places play in supporting housing, density, and community stability, and it should help the city make better, more informed decisions in the future.”
