Communities of Schools of Savannah

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, Monday, October 10, 2016  -   Communities in Schools of Savannah is requesting the communities support as we strive to assist our students and families post Hurricane Matthew.

It has come to our attention that many of our students and families living in the Westlake Apartments, as well as other parts of the city, experienced flooding and damage to their homes during Hurricane Matthew. Many lost everything. In an effort to support our students and families, Communities in Schools of Savannah has initiated our Kids Closet Drive. Kids Closet  is filled with everything from school supplies and personal care items to uniforms and clothing.

Kid's Closet runs solely off of donations and the items in the closet  will be distributed to students at Haven Elementary School.  Excess will  be distributed to students and families at DeRenne Middle School, Myers Middle School,  and Beach High School.

"It is important to understand that most of our families are low income and struggle with the most basic expenses. Something like this is catastrophic as most do not own their home, they rent, so therefore the insurances most homeowners think of, do not exist for these families." Said Catalina Garcia-Quick, Executive Director, oh Communities in Schools of Savannah. "With students returning to school on October 17, 2016,  It's important to us that we continue to provide our students with the resources they need to succeed in the classroom. We want to ensure they are comfortable, have a sense of dignity, and that they feel positive about going to school because they have the things they need".

"Immediately we request financial donations or donations of gift cards - specifically VISA, Master Card,  Wal-Mart, Target, & SAMS. Our goal is to purchase what is needed as needed so that we may support our families in the best possible way." If you would like to donate specific items, the i tems immediately requested are

Haven Elementary School Uniforms : Youth Sizes, S, M, L, XL Haven Elementary serves K-5 students
Haven Elementary School, School Supplies

Beach High School, School UniformsSizes S, M, L, XL

Personal Hygiene Items: toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc.
Child size boys/girls underwear, socks, undershirts
Adult size men/women underwear, socks, undershirts

In a nutshell these students have families have in some cases lost everything. We encourage you to support Communities in Schools of Savannah as we surround our students with a community of support in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.
