Suspect in murder of two year old Wynter Smith from Lansing charged in connection with fleeing police

Mount Clemens, MI - Today, a 26 year old man was charged in connection with fleeing from police after an alleged vicious assault, kidnapping and murder.

It is alleged that on Sunday, July 2, 2023, Rashad Trice assaulted his ex-girlfriend, kidnapped her two year old daughter, and drove away in the mother’s car in Ingham County.  An amber alert was issued.  Early Monday, July 3, 2023, St. Clair Shores police attempted a traffic stop and Trice fled at a high rate of speed.  After colliding with a police vehicle, Trice’s car was disabled.  When officers tried to get Trice out of the vehicle, he grabbed at an officer’s gun, and resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.  The little girl was found dead in Detroit on the evening of Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

In Macomb County, Rashad Trice is charged with Fleeing and Eluding in the Third Degree (five-year felony), Attempt to Disarm an Officer (five-year felony), Receiving and Concealing a Motor Vehicle (five-year felony), Assault with Dangerous Weapon (five-year felony), Resisting and Obstructing Causing Injury (four-year felony) and  three counts Resisting and Obstructing a Police Office (two-year felonies).  He will be arraigned in Macomb County at an undetermined date and time.  Trice was arraigned in Ingham County on multiple charges and remains in jail without bond.

“Tragically, this case has taken a heart-wrenching turn, as we must now face the devastating reality that the little girl, a precious life with endless potential, was brutally taken away. The alleged events that transpired in our neighbor county are heinous actions. The relentless efforts of all law enforcement including the St. Clair Shores and Eastpointe police departments led to the eventual capture of the defendant. However, the apprehension did not come without difficulty, as he actively evaded his capture and ultimate arrest, displaying a complete disregard for the lives and safety of others. The defendant's resistance and attempts to elude justice only compound the severity of his crimes,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
