Warren Police Officer Arraigned for Assault

Mount Clemens, MI - Today, Warren Jail Officer Matthew Rodriguez, 48 years-old, was arraigned in connection with assaulting an inmate when booking him into custody. 


On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the victim was arrested by Warren Police Officers on felony charges.  He was transported to the Warren Police Department Jail. Arresting officers turned the victim over to Jail Officer Matthew Rodriguez’s custody.  It is alleged that Rodriguez and the victim exchanged words, then Rodriguez struck the victim multiple times.


Matthew Rodriguez of Southgate is charged with Public Officer - Wilful Neglect of Duty (one-year misdemeanor) and Assault and Battery (93 day misdemeanor).  Rodriguez was arraigned in front of Warren District Court Chief Judge John Chmura, who set bond at $5,000 personal bond.  The Probable Cause Hearing has not been scheduled at this time.


“No badge or uniform can shield anyone from accountability. When the trust placed in law enforcement is violated, it is our duty as prosecutors to uphold the principles of fairness and integrity. Charging a police officer is a solemn reminder that no one is above the law, and that the power bestowed upon them must be used responsibly and within the bounds of the law,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
