Musician Don Henley Recognizes Sky Island Conservation Group with National Award

Tucson, Ariz - Tucson-based Sky Island Alliance will join the company of actors and rock stars when Don Henley's Walden Woods Project recognizes them for their outstanding environmental achievements in Boston, Mass, on Tuesday, September 16th.

The Walden Woods Project, founded by musician Don Henley, is presenting Sky Island Alliance with its annual Environmental Challenge Award. Robert Redford is also scheduled to appear, to be recognized for his global environmental leadership.

The fundraiser event and concert will be hosted by Don Henley, to be held at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre in Boston, Mass. Robert Redford will give the keynote address, followed by a concert performed by The Eagles.

The Environmental Challenge Award that Sky Island Alliance is to receive recognizes "individuals or organizations that have focused on unique environmental challenges at a local, regional or national level...Their efforts serve as a model for others who would face similar challenges and who seek an effective, constructive and sustainable outcome."

"Our skilled staff works very hard, and with great passion. We are genuinely thrilled and proud of our achievements on behalf of wildlife and wild places in the Sky Island region. It's a great honor and opportunity to be recognized for our work in this special way," said Sky Island Alliance Development Director, Keri Dixon.

The organization's Executive Director, Jan Holder, and wildlife biologists Sergio Avila and Jessica Moreno will be in Boston to receive the award on behalf of Sky Island Alliance.

Sky Island Alliance is a conservation group based in Tucson, Arizona known for their bi-national focus, science-based conservation and volunteer engagement. Sky Island Alliance protects and restores native plants and animals and wildlife habitat in southern Arizona and New Mexico and in northwestern Mexico. Sky Island Alliance promotes appreciation of the region's unique biological diversity through citizen science, hands-on volunteer opportunities and public education. Sky Island Alliance connects people to nature and shapes land management through science-based advocacy.

In addition to giving the keynote address at the awards event, Robert Redford will receive The Walden Woods Project Global Environmental Leadership Award. The Global Leadership Award was first presented in 2012 to President Bill Clinton and recognizes significant achievement in the areas of climate stability, biodiversity, natural resource stewardship, human understanding, and global environmental policy. It draws its inspiration from the foundational thinking of Henry David Thoreau and builds upon his ageless principles of environmental stewardship, global interconnectedness, and personal responsibility.

The public can see the Sky Island Alliance's Environmental Challenge Award and meet staff at La Cocina Old Town Artisans, in downtown Tucson, Ariz, on Tuesday, September 30th between 5pm- 9pm. As part of La Cocina's Tuesdays for Tucson, sales from food and drink that night will benefit Sky Island Alliance's work.
