Hafele Hosts an Illuminating February Chapter Meeting
By Diana Mosher -- Kitchen and bath designers always welcome the opportunity to expand their lighting knowledge for an even better client experience. On February 15, NKBA Manhattan Chapter members came out for a special Chapter Meeting at the Hӓfele Showroom at 20 West 22nd Street. Rod Jean, Lighting Business Development Manager for Hӓfele NYC Metro, presented “Luminous Living: Elevating Kitchen Experiences.”
| | |
Attendees at the February Chapter Meeting enjoyed a Valentines Day themed menu with light bites and drinks as Rod shared his insights into the art and science of kitchen lighting design.
Hӓfele’s strong foundation of collaboration with millworkers has uniquely positioned the brand with an in-depth understanding of the transformative impact of lighting. Hӓfele’s lighting solutions including LED strips, spotlights and ambient lighting seamlessly integrate into millwork projects elevating not only the visual appeal but also the functionality and efficiency of every kitchen installation.
Rod is passionate about all aspects of lighting. His big take-away was once you experience the beauty, visual drama and functionality of layered lighting throughout the kitchen—and inside drawers and cabinets—there’s no going back. A layered lighting approach with strategic placement creates a truly luxury experience.
| |
|
During his interactive presentation, Rod encouraged audience participation as he explored the transformative impact of lighting on our daily lives. From ambient illumination that sets the mood to precision task lighting and aesthetically pleasing accent lighting,
Rod described Hӓfele's many innovative solutions. Proper lighting within cabinets and drawers allows users to categorize and arrange items effectively. Lighting choices add an aesthetic dimension to the kitchen as well as personalization through a range of options that allow the resident to express their style and preferences.
| | |
As Rod noted, layered lighting ensures flexibility for various kitchen activities. By integrating smart lighting technologies and considering color temperature and CRI, Hӓfele’s aim is to not only meet but exceed the evolving expectations of modern kitchen design.
Thank you to our hosts for a fabulous event! If you missed NKBA Manhattan’s February Chapter Meeting at Hӓfele, you can catch all the fun by watching our event coverage!

Meet Diana Mosher
By Jamie Keel — Diana Mosher, principal of Diana Mosher Associates LLC, joined the NKBA Manhattan Chapter for its many networking and education opportunities. “I wanted to spend time around experienced kitchen and bath designers to learn more about how it’s all done, see new products, and build relationships with manufacturers so I can up-level the services I offer my clients.”
She currently serves on the Programs Committee as Co-Chair, and she is a member of the Auxiliary Council. “Volunteering is essential to the success of the Chapter, but volunteers also
benefit immensely,” says Diana. “The more you put in, the more you get from your membership.” She is also active in the American Society of Interior Designers New York Metro Chapter, where she previously served on the Board as Communications Director.
Diana enjoys working on both commercial and residential projects in NYC and surrounding suburbs. She’s currently designing a workplace project across from Grand Central Station, and she’s always up for an apartment project.
| |
|
“My interest in apartments actually began when I was a child. We moved many times when my father’s advertising career took us from New York to Frankfurt, Mexico City, and Caracas. I loved touring new construction and vintage apartments with my mother, who also happens to be a very good decorator. There would be a hotel stay, then a short-term furnished apartment typically while we waited for our furniture to be shipped, and then a larger apartment until it was time to move to a new city in another country and do it all over again,” says Diana.

In fact, these early experiences have shaped her design business and marketing niche as a New York City apartment designer—consulting in cities everywhere.
Diana resides in a co-op in the historic district of Jackson Heights, where she and her husband raised two sons. “We were excited to welcome our first grandchild last month on Leap Day! Luckily, my son’s apartment will accommodate their growing family. And so did ours. But I remember my friend was raising her baby in a one-bedroom apartment. Her experience inspired me to pitch and sell my very first interior design article to one of the baby magazines. It was called “No Nursery… No Problem.”
Diana worked full-time in print and digital publishing while earning her degree from the New York School of Interior Design. When she wasn’t at school, she interviewed architects, real estate developers, and interior designers about their projects, reported on trends, and attended trade shows like ICFF, KBIS, NeoCon, and the Milan Furniture Fair. She also launched a popular awards program showcasing the
apartment industry’s best architecture and design.
Diana says, “Decisions about finishes, stylish plumbing fixtures, and appliances drive the success of
commercial and residential design projects. My membership in NKBA Manhattan Chapter helps prepare me for that.”

NKBA | KBIS TOASTS KBIS’ 60TH ANNIVERSARY AT KBIS 2024 WITH CHAMPAGNE AND GIVEAWAYS
Following a year-long commemoration of its 60th anniversary kicked off at KBIS 2023, NKBA | KBIS celebrated six decades of its trade show with a champagne toast and giveaways on February 29, 2024. NKBA|KBIS Global President & CEO Bill Darcy and Chief Global Relations Officer Suzie Williford welcomed KBIS attendees to the show’s NEXTStage and shared KBIS highlights from the past 60 years.
Suzie Williford pointed out that KBIS started with 24 exhibitors and 250 attendees in 1964, and today, the show features nearly 700 exhibitors spanning over a half-million square feet and attracts more than 110,000 kitchen and bath industry professionals. “How do we top that next year?” asked Williford. “We will. We somehow think of something every year, and we’ve been doing that every year since 1964.”
Darcy asked the audience to toast KBIS—its past and its future. “Here’s not only to the last 60 years of KBIS but also to the next 60 years of KBIS.” Next year, DCW will again take place from Feb. 25 – 27, 2025, in Las Vegas.

KBIS DEBUTS IN PHILADELPHIA
The first AIKD Kitchen Show drew approximately 24 exhibitors and 250 attendees to Philadelphia in 1964. In 1973, show management was turned over to the trade show division of Gralla Publications, which at the time, published Kitchen & Bath Business magazine. The AIKD Kitchen Show joined with Gralla’s Apartment Builder/Developer Conference and Exposition and became the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show and the National Kitchen and Bath Conference.
In 1981, the AIKD Kitchen Show changed its name to the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS). That show, initially a very small gathering, has grown to be the centerpiece of North America’s kitchen and bath industry.
| |
Since 2014, the show has been held in conjunction with the International Builders’ Show (IBS), sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Other construction-related trade shows are held at the same time, and the coordinated events are called Design & Construction Week. DCW brings together 80,000 design and construction professionals in the largest annual gathering of the residential design and construction industry. (Image from the 2015 show in Las Vegas)
