A Prayer for the Preachers at Christmas

God of ancient stories and silent nights,

hear our prayers for the preachers this week.

You have called them

To proclaim the good news that we have been waiting to hear.

To point to the way to the manger.

To announce with the angels that Christ is born.

And so we pray:

For the tired preacher who has been preaching on Christmas Eve for years and is certain that she has nothing new to say;

For the new preacher on his first Christmas in the pulpit who wonders if his words will be sufficient;

For the joyful preacher who delights in the candlelight;

For the grieving preacher who is missing her loved one;

For the anxious preacher who worries about making Christmas morning perfect for his own children;

For the awestruck preacher who can't quite believe you have called her to this work.

They will likely be the first ones there and the last to leave.

While others go home to family Christmas gatherings, these preachers will make sure the candles were extinguished, the lights turned off, the livestream stopped.

They will tend to your church. They will care for your people.

Loosen their shoulders.

Unclench their jaws.

Give them good words.

Reassure them that they are enough,

that you are enough, that you are with us.

Emmanuel.

Let them proclaim the good news.

Let them trust the good news.

Let them rejoice.

Let them rest.

God of hope: hear our prayers.

In Christ's name we pray.

Amen.

Dear Disciple preachers,

I know you are up to your ears in details right now, preparing for Christmas Eve and looking ahead to next Sunday and probably dealing with a pastoral emergency or two. I'm praying for you.

As this year comes to a close, I want to say a word of gratitude for the Proclamation Project Advisory Team, who have faithfully served this year: Ron Allen, Esther Robles, Amanda Kerr, Larry Morris, Phil Snider, and Elizabeth Grasham. Their wisdom, support, and leadership have been instrumental in making this work happen.

I'm looking forward to what next year has in store for us: the next session of the Preacher Book Club (details here!), online and in-person events, new resources, another round of grants for bivocational preachers, more cohort groups, and, of course, lots of good preaching.

We have good news to proclaim. I know you will proclaim it well.

Christmas blessings to you --

Rev. Lee Hull Moses

Executive Director, The Proclamation Project

Office of General Minister and President

Meet up with other Disciples preachers for an informal conversation about what we’re reading.

Our next selection is When Church Stops Working, by Andrew Root and Blair D. Bertrand. While it’s not a book specifically about preaching, it does have some important insights about how we do church. Our conversation will focus on how those insights translate to our practice of preaching.

There are two options to join the discussion:
