December 2023

Dear Disciple preachers,

Take a deep breath. I know there are a million things to do between now and Christmas Eve. Most of them will get done. Some of them won't. Either way, Jesus will come and God will be with us.

This issue of For the Messengers has a few bits of news and notes, and then a prayer for you in the midst of this busy week and this holy season.

First, the news and notes:

  • Have you thought about what you're preaching on December 31? (I know, the Sundays just keep coming!) If you're stumped or out of creative juices, we've got you covered. Here's a very simple sermon outline that you can adapt to your context. It's interactive and easy to pull together and it'll help your congregation get ready for what God is doing in the new year.

  • Our next online preaching workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 13, at 12:00 ET / 9:00 PT. Rev. Dr. Leah Schade of Lexington Theological Seminary will lead us in a conversation about preaching in an election year. Learn more here, save the date, and watch for registration to open in early January.

You are working hard this week. You've got good news to proclaim. I know you will proclaim it well.

A Prayer for the Preachers at Christmas

God of ancient stories and silent nights, hear our prayers for the preachers this week.

You have called them,

To proclaim the good news that we have been waiting to hear.

To point to the way to the manger.

To announce with the angels that Christ is born.

And so we pray:

For the tired preacher who has been preaching on Christmas Eve for years and is certain that she has nothing new to say;

For the new preacher on his first Christmas in the pulpit who wonders if his words will be sufficient;

For the joyful preacher who delights in the candlelight;

For the grieving preacher who is missing her loved one;

For the anxious preacher who worries about making Christmas morning perfect for his own children;

For the awestruck preacher who can't quite believe you have called her to this work.

They will likely be the first ones there and the last to leave. While others go home to family Christmas gatherings, these preachers will make sure the candles were extinguished, the lights turned off, the livestream stopped. They will tend to your church. They will care for your people.

Loosen their shoulders.

Unclench their jaws.

Give them good words.

Reassure them that they are enough, that you are enough, that you are with us.

Emmanuel.

Let them proclaim the good news.

Let them trust the good news.

Let them rejoice.

Let them rest.

God of hope: hear our prayers.

In Christ's name we pray.

Amen.

Preaching in an Election Year: What the Bible Can Teach Us about Dialogue in a Divisive Time

An online workshop for preachers

Tuesday, February 13

12:00-2:00 ET / 9:00-11:00 PT

How can preachers guide their congregations through the polarizing politics of an election year so that they are true to the gospel and attentive to their contexts? Join The Rev. Dr. Leah Schade as she shares her research about ministry, preaching, and social issues and offers a framework for preaching in a politically contentious season. Participants should come with their Bible, awareness of their community context, and willingness to learn a way to engage biblical texts that invites deliberation and conversation. We will have time for participation in small group conversations to discuss texts for preaching Lent, and preachers will come away with tools and ideas for upcoming sermons. Registration will open in early January. Learn more here.
