STORM FORECAST CANCELS HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS, PARADE
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION WAS
SCHEDULED SATURDAY;
PARADE COULD BE SET FOR A LATER DATE

Tifton's 20th Annual Hometown Holiday Christmas Celebration (HHCC) and Christmas Parade, which were scheduled
Saturday, have been canceled because of
heavy rains forecast
throughout the
day.
|
|
"After a
thorough review
of the forecasted
weather report
for
Saturday, Dec. 1
, and due to the predicted
inclement
weather, we are
officially canceling
the
Christmas Parade
and the
Hometown Holiday Christmas Celebration
for
Dec. 1,
" the HHCC committee announced
Thursday afternoon
.
"We will make an
announcement
via social media
should there be
a future
reschedule
date. We appreciate your patience and understanding."
The city's
HHCC committee
has spent the past few days monitoring the weather forecast. By Thursday afternoon, it was clear
that widespread
inclement weather is
expected throughout the day Saturday and into
the evening.
The
National Weather Service
is predicting an
80
percent chance of
rain Saturday
with a chance of a
severe thunderstorm
and winds up to
20 mph
. The forecast for
Saturday night
is for a
40
percent chance of rain and high winds.
The
Tifton parade
was scheduled to begin at
5 p.m.
Saturday with the
Hometown Holiday Christmas Celebration
underway thereafter. Plans had included
carnival
rides,
"ice" skating,
zip-lining
,
pony
rides,
live entertainment
in several downtown locations and numerous
food
and
craft
vendors.
The
Rotary
Club
of
Tifton
is still holding its
"Breakfast with Santa"
from
8-11 a.m.
Saturday
at the
Tift
County
R
ecreation
Department gym
on
Victory Drive
.

HURRICANE RECOVERY
TOWN HALL MEETINGS
SET MONDAY IN TIFTON

Because of what has been called the
"tremendous response"
to the
Federal Emergency Management Agency's
(FEMA)
Disaster Recovery Center
in
Tift County
due to
Hurricane Michael
,
three
town hall
information meetings
will be held
Monday, Dec. 3.
Each of the meetings, at
10 a.m., 3 p.m.
and
6:30 p.m.,
will be held at the
Tift County Recreation Department
at
402 North Victory Drive
.
Representatives from
FEMA
, the
Georgia Emergency Management Agency
, the
Small Business Administration
,
Colquitt Electric Membership Corp.
and two
local insurance agents
will all be present.
Topics will range from what
assistance federal
and
state
governments can and cannot provide,
hazard
mitigation,
disaster
loans,
homeowner’s/business owner’s
insurance, emergency
generator use
and
personal responsibility
when dealing with natural disasters.

TIFT SCHOOL BOARD NARROWS SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH TO 10 CANDIDATES

|
The
Tift County Board of Education
has pared the
search
for a new school
superintendent
to
10
candidates.
The initial list had 27 names. School board members have been conducting interviews and winnowing the list.
More interviews are scheduled, and the school board hope to have the candidates narrowed to three names by Dec. 11. The board hopes to name a new superintendent by early next year.
The
school board
is seeking a
successor
to current Superintendent
Patrick Atwater
(pictured at right),
who has
previously announced
his intention to
retire
next
June 30
after the current school year ends.

TRMC SURGEON TO SPEAK
AT ABAC COMMENCEMENT

Tracy Nolan
, the first female general surgeon at
Tift Regional Medical Center
, will be guest
speaker
at the
fall
commencement
Dec. 13
at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
A total of
170
students are expected to receive diplomas at the
10 a.m.
event in
Gressette Gym
.
A
Tifton
native and
ABAC
graduate,
Nolan
was recently named a
Fellow
of the
American College of Surgeons
. She was one of
1,970
initiates in the 2018 class from the United States, Canada and 73 other countries.
“My life as a
surgeon
is
difficult,
but it’s also
exciting
and
challenging
,” Nolan said. “That’s one reason I love being a surgeon so much.”
After graduating from
Tift County High School
as an honor graduate in
1995
, Nolan compiled a
4.0
average in five academic quarters at
ABAC
and was selected as the
1997 J.G. Woodroof Scholar,
awarded to the top academic student.
Nolan
continued her academic success at the
University of Georgia
, graduating in
1998
with a
bachelor’s
degree in
dietetics
. After completing her
master’s
in
dietetics
from UGA, Nolan became a
registered dietitian
.
“I felt like there was more I could do for my patients,” said
Nolan
, daughter of
Mike and Kris Chason
of
Tifton
.
She enrolled in the
Mercer University School of Medicine
, graduated in
2010
, and the dietitian became a
doctor
.
After medical school, Nolan served
five
years of
surgery residency
at the
Medical Center of Central Georgia
. She joined
Tift Regional
in
2015
.

Sleigh bells will be ringing as the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Department of Fine Arts presents
“A Christmas to Treasure”

7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4,
at the
Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts.

is invited to join ABAC faculty, staff, and students for a night of
holiday cheer

Department of Fine Arts
. “This concert is perfect for every member of the family.”

include “A Christmas Fanfare,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Merry Christmas to All,” “The First Noel,” “There is Faint Music,” “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Carol of the Drum,” “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” with the

There will also be a

HELP THE YMCA HELP A CHILD
THIS CHRISTMAS

The
Tiftarea YMCA Christmas
event for
needy
children will be at
9 a.m. Dec. 8,
in the
TRMC Events Center
on Carpenter Road.
During the annual
Y Christmas
event, the organization reaches out to the
community
to help
sponsor
Christmas for
underprivileged
local
children
. The Y works closely with the local
PattiCake House
and
Toys for Tots
to reach as many children as possible. Last year,
152
underserved
children
were given a
special Christmas.
"This is one of the most
rewarding
events we do. To see the way these kids react to receiving these gilts, many of which are just
basic necessities
, is truly
humbling
," said
Darian Peavy
, the YMCA's chief executive officer.
The
Tiftarea Y
is asking folks to offer a helping hand by
adopting
a
local child
for
Christmas
. The YMCA has a
list
of children whose families will not be able to provide Christmas
gifts
for them without
outside assistance
.
Donors
are still needed and are asked to provide a child with a
laundry basket
wrapped in clear cellophane filled with
shoes, underwear, clothing, a Bible and toys
. All
baskets
need to be dropped off at the YMCA office, at
1657 S. Carpenter Road
, no later than
Monday, Dec. 3
.
Children
will be invited to an event during which
Santa
will be present.

GASOLINE PRICES DROPPING IN GA
Georgia's gasoline prices
are quickly approaching the
lowest
prices of the
year
, and motorists are seeing more discounts.
The price of
crude oil
also dropped by more than
10
percent amid concerns that strong global oil production will overpower demand.
As of the
beginning of this
week,
Tifton's average gas price was
$2.25 per gallon, compared to
Albany, $2.30
average;
Valdosta, $2.36
average;
Rome, $2.26
; and
Atlanta, $2.38.
Georgia's
statewide
average
price at the beginning of the week was
$2.39
, according
to the
American
Automobile
Association
.
Gasoline
supply
remains
strong
nationwide at
10
percent better than this time last year,
AAA
said.

'POLAR BEARS' TO PLUNGE ON NEW YEAR'S DAY FOR CHARITIES

Tiftarea YMCA
will host the
Sixth Annual Polar Bear Plunge
at
11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1,
in the Tiftarea YMCA
Hunt Park pool
.
Eleven
participants will
compete
against each other to
raise money
for their respective
local charity
. The individual raising the
most money
for his or her
charity
, with the stipulation that they
must slide down
into the
plunge pool
, will receive
100
percent of the proceeds for their
charity
. All other
charities
will receive a
50
percent splint with
Tiftarea YMCA,
if their corresponding representative
takes the plunge
.

ABAC'S DONNA WEBB RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
|
|
Donna Webb
of Tifton, enrollment management director at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
, recently received the
Carol Nobles Distinguished Service Award
from the
Ga. Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Webb has been involved in enrollment management for
25
years in
Georgia
and
South Carolina
. She was named ABAC’s enrollment services director in
2008
after working as admissions director at the
University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
In
2011
, Webb became ABAC's enrollment management director.
Webb
said she was honored to receive the award, crediting its
namesake
for the path she took toward a successful career in
higher education
.
“
Carol
was someone who I patterned my career after every step of the way,”
Webb
said. “If she was leading a committee, I wanted to be on that committee. If she was doing a presentation, I was attending that presentation. I called her for advice and
guidance
, and she never steered me in the wrong direction. She helped me develop my
love
for
higher education
.”

Tifton First United Methodist Church
is in search of a Director of Music Ministries
who will coordinate all music programs within the church
to include opportunities for all age levels, as talent and commitment allow.
The Director of Music Ministries will collaborate
with the pastors, music and worship teams to provide music
for traditional and contemporary worship services.
The Director of Music Ministries will lead the chancel choir,
other musicians and the congregation in traditional music worship
for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services and support leadership
of our contemporary service held at 10:42 a.m.

The President’s Award for Academic Excellence is presented to the

USDA AWARDS TIFTON GRANT SUPPORTING RURAL VETERINARY SERVICES
The
U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture
recently awarded
14
grants totaling
$2.4 million
to support
rural veterinary services
, including
a
grant
to the
University of
Georgia
in
Tifton
.
UGA
received
$243,500
for the
veterinary microbiology residency program
at the
Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory.
Other
grants
went to programs at the
University of Arkansas, Iowa State University
,
Michigan
State, Pennsylvania State and Texas A&M University
, and other
rural
veterinary
services
around
the country.
