Happy Summer to all our friends and colleagues!
I have recently been honored with an inclusion in the
IAM Strategy 300
list of leading world IP strategists,
for the 6th year in a row. As in previous years, I am excited to join the ranks of an esteemed group of colleagues. Beyond the professional accolade, being an IP strategist is my passion: there is nothing I would rather do, day in and day out, than help companies and inventors bring innovation to market.
In this edition of our newsletter, we share with you a recent Fortune magazine story featuring our client, Blockstack, a blockchain startup that has been the inspiration behind HBO's Silicon Valley Season 5 plotline. Also in this newsletter, we highlight some of the new entries to the expanding Foresight
: the blog about "Geoffrey the $500M Giraffe" covering the topic of brand valuation, as well as a recent webinar that I gave to a crowd of European and Japanese companies on the topic of: "
IP Fundamentals for Startups and SMEs".
We hope you enjoy some time off this summer! If your travels take you to the Bay Area, please stop by our office for coffee!

Blockstack - The "Real" Pied Piper!
wanted its fictional startup Pied Piper to build a "new Internet" for season 5, the comedy series turned to a real-life blockchain company, and Foresight client, Blockstack. Blockstack, a New Jersey-based startup cofounded in 2013 by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, is developing a platform for blockchain-powered web applications-or as Blockstack calls it, "a new decentralized Internet." We at Foresight have been engaged to value the company's token, a first-of-its-kind valuation in this industry.

Geoffrey the $500M Giraffe, by Sebastian Custodia, Foresight Associate
Intangible assets can be one of a company's most valuable collection of assets; however, this is not always evident when looking at the balance sheet. Neither GAAP nor IFRS accounting standards require companies to record the value of their internally developed intangible assets, so their value remains "hidden," often until an acquisition or liquidation event (such as bankruptcy). Toys "R" Us is one of the most recent examples in which the public gets to see the great value that a company's intangible assets carry, even when the company itself has little to no value as a going-concern. Furthermore, we can start to understand the value of some of the world's most well-known and successful consumer brands when comparing their value to the reported values of the companies' reported assets.

Foresight President, Efrat Kasznik, recently gave
European and Japanese startups and small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) seeking to understand the value of their intellectual property as a strategic business asset, throughout the lifecycle, from the early stage to exit. Intellectual property assets are frequently the most valuable assets for high-tech or life sciences startups, and other small and SMEs. Companies often struggle with how best to manage and grow their IP portfolio to adequately protect their core ideas and products, while simultaneously increase corporate value and gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
