SCHOOL IS STARTING - DRIVE CAREFULLY!

The first day of school for most of our neighborhood kids is Wednesday, August 13th - early this year! Please drive carefully - watch for walkers, bikers and scooters. Slowing down during your morning and afternoon commute won't make you late - and will make it safer on our roads for all residents. Parents, please talk to your teenage drivers about slowing down and keeping a watchful eye out. Thank you!

Deer in Forest Lakes

Thanks to everyone who attended last months meeting regarding the deer population in Forest Lakes. All residents were heard. No decisions have been made. We hope to have a Q&A session regarding archery on common land soon. We will everyone know details and times when they become available.

ROADWORK - SOUTH ENTRANCE

Engineers are in the final stages for VDOT approvals to obtain permits to start working on the north side of Ashwood Blvd and that will allow them to make the road tie-in to Ashwood Blvd, as well as run the utility pipes across Ashwood. We'll have a better idea by the beginning of next week and will let residents know the schedule and sequence of work when it becomes available.

The last TGIF by the South Pool will be Friday, August 22nd from 7-10pm. BYOB and a snack to share. FLCA will provide soda, mixers, ice and water. We had a great turnout for July's - hope to see even more this month!

Invasive of the Month - Oriental Bittersweet

Oriental Bittersweet’s pretty, colorful berries belie a killer. It grows over other plants, including large trees, eventually smothering them. Native victims succumb when they are no longer able to perform photosynthesis, or when they are completely girdled and even uprooted by Oriental Bittersweet’s massive weight. Also known as Asiatic Bittersweet, Oriental staff vine, and climbing spindle berry, it was introduced to the US from Eastern Asia in the 1860s for erosion control and as an ornamental. Sadly, it is still being sold here, despite its well-known destructiveness. Its rapid growth (up to 12 feet/year), great size (heights of 60 feet and thickness of a forearm) and versatility (thrives in both sunny and shaded areas) makes it a real threat to native plants in our area.

Oriental Bittersweet spreads ambitiously in two ways. Its berries—first green, then yellow or later red—are eaten by birds that then disperse the seeds far and wide. Secondly, it spreads by stolons (horizontal shoots that give rise to roots and branches) and root suckers that are sprouts of new growth at the root of a plant. Its aggressive spread and quick growth makes this a particularly dangerous invasive plant.

What you can do:

1.      Learn to recognize new shoots and pull them out when they are small. You can be sure you yanked the right plant when you see bright orange roots.

2.      DON’T BUY Oriental Bittersweet as a houseplant, yard coverage, or in a wreath.

I will be on vacation the week of August 10-17. I may do some lessons on Aug 10-11, depending on my schedule and weather. Stay tuned. We will see.

It is my plan to offer daily classes (Mon-Thurs) this fall for all ages/level. It has gone so well this summer, that I would like to keep it. Also depending on my assistant coaches schedules, we will limit the number of kids in each class/day and also have the kids come at the same time and then separate. I will still be the lead pro and will coordinate everything. Registration will go back to the same monthly process. You will need to email me when your child would like to come and I will AUTO ENROLL THEM in the same classes for the next month unless you tell me otherwise by the 25th of each month. Top Dog of the Month

Meet Lilo!

Lilo is a blue heeler/terrier mix and her 2nd birthday is next week!

Lilo is a very proud (and new) resident of Ravenscroft. Her mom says that she chases her tail more than any other dog she knows. It just never gets old. She's the happiest of dogs, and loves to meet every dog she runs into on our Forest Lakes paths.

A very Happy 2nd Birthday to Miss Lilo.
